The detective vision capability featured in the award-winning Batman: Arkham Asylum was certainly the most useful tool in Batman?s arsenal, thanks to it giving players the edge needed to get the jump on your enemies. However, the game?s art director, David Hego recently spoke at Develop 2010 and mentioned that he regrets the decision to integrate the X-ray styled mode into the critically-acclaimed game, and that it made the game too easy.

Hego joked during his keynote that players who would use the detective vision throughout the course of the whole game made him ?want to cry a little bit.? Hego explained:

?It was a gameplay decision to make detective vision so strong?we?re going to try not to do that mistake again.?

Hego continued to talk about how the detective vision could potentially be toned down for the sequel by stating Rocksteady would ?make it more like augmented reality next time?.

What are your views on the game?s detective vision feature? Did you use it frequently? Think they should keep it for the sequel? Let us know via the comments section below.

I loved the feature, but it really annoyed me how you missed out on the great art of AA using it.

I thought the feature was great. Perhaps in the sequel they could decrease the range of it or something. Or only show you an enemy when they are moving. I can imagine some people ran through the whole game with it on.

They should just add a power bar/time limit to it so you can quickly scan a room but not leave it enabled all of the time.

EDIT/ Or even better you can't move whilst detective mode is on.

I enabled it and then switched it off when not needed, loved the visuals and didn't want to miss out on all the artistic styling.

Dunno if this was in the original but how about a scoring system where the more you use detective vision the higher your penalty.

Yeah, I didn't like that I had to choose between seeing the nice graphics, or having an easier time to play the game.

The part of the game I liked best, was when flowers were overgrown all over the place and you had bright colorful stuff going everywhere. Beating Ivy of course ended this... :<

Or higher difficulty modes where you can't use it at all, and/or achievements to incentivise not using it.

Trouble I see with just making it an achievement is people will run through the game on lower difficulty using it as much as they like, and the 2nd play through they already know what happens. So it's not much of a loss to them.

Removing it completely (like in the achievement example), completely removes it from tasks/missions though. So it would always have to be an optional feature. Whereas in the original it was required for a lot of different things.

Or how about the simplest idea of them all.

How about not making Detective mode turn the whole screen blue like Batman sees the world from a predator's view point.. it just highlights things in his normal view..

Damn good game but yeah, found myself fighting between Detective Mode and Unreal engine graphics.

Agree... two other titles from last year, Wolfenstein and Ghostbusters also suffered from relying too much on their alternate view mode, which annoyed me since I prefer to see the levels as they were designed.

I would only use it momentarily and then switch it off. I personally think they should keep it as is and let the user decide if they want to use it or how much they use it. I would not argue it makes the game much easier, because it does, especially if you decide to never turn it off.

But I do think you miss out on a lot if you have continuous usage of it, artistically and other things. If they want to make the game harder, they could have it completely turned off on the highest difficulty otherwise, they should leave it untouched. I also do not think, nor do I think they will, make it achievement based somehow, either not using or or whatever many other ways to make one.
