Ironman273
Four Fantastic PlayStation Move Tech Demos, With A StarCraft Twist I don't know how amazing the games of PlayStation Move, September's Wii-like PlayStation 3 motion controller, are going to be. But the tech demos continue to be terrific. Here are four of the newest. All videos were shot by me in New York earlier this week. Demonstrating the Move demos is PlayStation researcher Anton Mikhailov. None of these demos is necessarily going to be released to the public, but each shows the potential of the precise Move controller. In the demos Mikhailov uses a variety of controller configurations including simply using one Move, using Move wand in each hand, or using a Move controller in one hand and Navigation Controller (it has an analog stick) in the other. All set-ups require a PlayStation Eye camera to be pointed at the user. (The sensor bar you see over the TV, however, is not part of the Move set-up. That is for stereoscopic 3D visuals, which wasn't part of these demos.) (Videos at source) Source: Kotaku I'll wait to comment ;) but one thing I did notice was, holy reflections, Batman!! The move controllers are bright! I guess the screen of games you are playing wouldn't be dark all the time, but there are many games that use darkness to set the mood. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted July 23, 2010 Veteran Share Posted July 23, 2010 Whoa, the RTS demo was pretty cool. The pressure-sensitive selection circle beats the non pressure-sensitive selection rectangle for most, if not all, RTS games on the PC.
00000
The RTS controls look great. I think Under Siege and Ruse will be the most impressive early Move titles.
HilariousNinja
The RTS one was good, looks the most likely to be implemented in a game. The chameleon demo was very cool, though like Anton said, not sure what kind of game it would be seen in.
red.
They look pretty cool, the only problem i see is the glare from the controllers on the screen. However it will depend on whether or not the third party developers use their imagination to come up with unique interactions rather than sloppy Wii ports. Ironman273
Here's my beef with the whole RTS thing. First of all, the zooming in and out is very cool, a very easy way to move around the map. But it's still a very simplified demo. At one point he actually says "It's very easy to select 4 units " and then proceeds to select 5. RTS's get messy where you have a bunch of units clustered together and you need to select all the tanks among a group that includes various units. The other thing is that you need to implement a build menu. I would imagine it's something like press a button have the top menu show up (units, buildings, etc.) then choose a top menu for the submenus to appear. The whole menu thing would be cursor based where you have to point the cursor at the menu (like the Wii's home screen). That's where the preciseness of the control starts making the cursor jiggle around. Look at the this video from 0:47 to 0:55 to see what I mean: The only way to get around this is to build it from the ground up with some new non-Wii-ish way to control it. carmatic
i was surprised at how 'traditional' the panning and zooming in the RTS demo looked... you'd think that they would have a more direct control over the camera, like mapping the camera movement axis-for-axis to the move controller.... when i am playing my RTS games i use the middle mouse button to drag the view around, maybe there could be an analogous button on the move controller? SaltLife
Just checked those demos out yesterday. Some pretty cool stuff. Wasn't sure about the dummy demo, but it's just that - a demonstration of the technology - now, the way they incorporated the move into echochrome ii allowing you to adjusting light sources is very cool (but nonetheless a dull game) I think I will actually be purchasing this add-on. Osiris
Just as I said in the RUSE topic I still say a Multi-touch table the original RUSE trailer was set around would be a better way to play, but this shows promise. Theres certainly potential with the tech for a wide range of games beyond just the basic games we tend to see for these new peripheral controlling systems. Theres certainly potential with the tech for a wide range of games beyond just the basic games we tend to see for these new peripheral controlling systems. Obviously but this is without a doubt the best looking way to control an RTS on a console so far. That pressure sensitive trigger on the move controller is going to add a lot towards games, think quite a lot of people forget about it
