PS3 Controller Resembling The 360 Controller?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

My DS3 went haywire a week ago, unable to switch off and having a mind of its own. So since I'm most likely going to buy another controller soon, I'd love to replace that pile of junk

with something that resembles the 360 layout and size. I'd love some suggestions on controllers that are close matches to the official Xbox 360 controller, curved triggers, same thumb-stick placement

and most importantly, same size as my hands are fairly big. Wired is preferred.

Cheers.

wasn't there that one madcatz controller that let you switch the placement of the dpad and the analog stick on the right for PS3? so the layout would be more like the xbox 360?

edit: nvm, it was saitek

but usually third party controllers are garbage.

Nicholas-c: Make sure you post about it. :) I want to see how it turns out.

I found another one, although you can't buy it just yet. Company is Power A.

This is the best PlayStation 3 controller right now, precisely because it's not shaped like a PS3 controller.

Power A spent a good deal of time taking what's best about the Xbox 360 controller—the most natural "traditional" controller—and bringing it to the PS3. It's called the PS3 Pro Elite, and it's only $50. You have your left analog stick up on the top left and D-Pad down on the bottom. The palm parts extend much lower, and are coated with a grippy, but breathable material, which makes a huge difference when you play games for hours on end.

The only thing that Power A didn't bring over from the 360 are the shoulder buttons. The L1, R1 buttons are more mushy, and the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons are super mushy, like the PS3's. This is my only complaint—I wish they went all the way and brought the Xbox's triggers over.

Oh, and you still get Sixaxis capabilities, so there really is no sacrifice. Plus you get glowing buttons, and true wireless, albeit a third-party wireless that you need a dongle for. The dongle is included.

Power A Makes a Wireless Xbox 360 Controller for the PS3For a cheaper, wired solution, Power A has a $20 controller that sacrifices stuff like Sixaxis, but still gives you the 360-style shape that will be great for secondary and tertiary and quaternary controllers that you only use when friends come over.

I'd be willing to pay a little extra for bluetooth wireless. Dongle kind of kills it for me.

Do these 3rd party controllers support rumble?

Also, if a 3rd party company makes a controller to feel like an xbox controller, I think it would be important to switch the mapping of the R1/L1 buttons to triggers. I currently have the Logitech Precision controller for the ps3 and while the triggers feel quite good, hardly any PS3 games allow the R2/L2 buttons to use the same trigger functionality of xbox controllers. I'm getting quite sick of games that just have the aim/shoot combo of R1/L1. Thank god the Resistance series allows you to map your own custom controls.

Supports rumble and sixaxis and you can switch up button layouts

The Cross battle adapter 2.0

is an adapter to allow you to connect your Xbox 360 wired controller to your PS 3 console for use with PS3 games. The XCM Cross Battle Adapter 2.0 is built with a new function for swapping the controller's triggers and bumpers. You can also swap the functions of A,B,X,Y buttons (Example: Set the function of A button to the X button or set the function of B button to the Y button, etc) and swap the functions of 2 analog sticks as well! The PS3 Six Axis mode and Rumble function are also supported. The best adapter in the industry just got better!

The Cross battle adapter 2.0 video shows you how to swap the function of the keys, enjoy :)

You really don't need anything else, with the ability to switch around any buttons/triggers also, no more complaining about games not being "COD controls" :p

I really hate the PS3 controller, and I need another so I can play (and buy) modnation racers for the girlfriend. They're so damned expensive and they're rubbish compared to the X360 ones :(

I'm sorry but... am I the only one that thinks they look like cheap toys? They really resemble something that would ship from Hong Kong and you would pay 99 cents for on eBay.

Any 3rd party controller is a big fat no.

1st party of some sorts or nothing.

By the way Sethos the v1.0 of that device above can be purchased much cheaper, it has everything apart from the ability to change button inputs.... although that in itself is a major selling point. No need to rely on games having the ability to do it if you can yourself.

and support rumble

Didn't Larry review this for Neowin? What's his take on it?

Dude, read the topic :p

It's supported rumble since V1.0 a year or two back, and the link I posted is to V2.0 which now supports changing your button layout.

The Cross Battle Adapter is a different product from what Larry reviewed, can't remember what his was called. Same company, it was just their first product in this line and yeah it didn't support rumble.

The one with rumble only (V1.0) is cheaper.

  • 3 weeks later...

Jesus, forgot all about this thread.

Thank you for all the recommendations - I'm quite keen on the Cross Battle Adapter and not sure why I didn't think of that thing, had my eye on it for a while. Only problem is,

I can't find the second edition anywhere. A store has the 1.0 and two 'fighter specific' adapters ( Som "K.O Gear" ) at a pretty steep price. I was hoping to get the vanilla 2.0.

So either I have to wait, get one of the fighter-labelled ones ( They support rumble as well ) or buy the 2.0 from somewhere in Europe, suggestions welcome.
