Host Oh Host!

What host?

  1. 1. Which Host shall I pick?

    • Bluehost

    • Web Hosting Buzz

Question

I really need a decent host.

I want pretty much everything to be unlimited (Space, Bandwidth, Domains). Who in the world should I choose. I would really like your suggestions for other hosts as well if you know of any decent ones.

I really like the look of hostgator, but the price really sets me back.

I like the look of bluehost, but apparently they suck.

Opinions are welcome and much needed.

Thanks,

Sam

sometimes it is yeah. If I started a website and for example it was as big as youtube, they would close it down because I am using too much. Its just because its shared hosting and its a bit unfair to steal everyone else's bandwidth.

There is no such thing as "unlimited" disk space and bandwidth. There are always limits. If you read their ToS/AUP you'll find that you can only upload files that are linked throughout the site (eg: you cannot use it to backup your website), may/not be able to upload media files (wmv, mp4, mpg, etc.), cannot use more than XX% of bandwidth per month and of course there's the possibility of even tighter restrictions on your usage (eg: Not using more than 10 concurrent MySQL connections, 10% CPU Usage at any given time). They utilize the word 'unlimited' to make you feel safe and cushiony but protect their assets with extreme and in-depth policies to ensure that you don't cost them.

If you want quality service, don't expect $1/mo or $5/yr prices. I'd say on average $5-15 is decent for a shared host when paying monthly.

I use hostgator and they are amazing in my experience.

They have a pretty fleshed-out knowledge base and a very active forum. Plus if you're looking to bill your clients quickly and easily, it even comes with a free copy of WHMCompleteSolution.

I would get hostgator in the blink of an eye as long as I know that I am getting a return in the long run. I started that spore site a year ago and have almost paid for the hosting expenses via donations, but apart from that is was a loss. I am now wanting to take on a broader topic ( tech in general) and if all hoes well I want to be able to earn a little money from it.

Money isn't my main motive for making a site however, I love being administrator, creating, designing and all that. I just want to be able to pay for the hosting, that's all.

Use Webhostingbuzz.com... They're really good...

+1

I use them too! Never had a problem. I have the old Bronze Plan so my plan is even cheaper than what they offer now. :shifty:

Some important things from Host Gator. Important to read it.

http://www.hostgator.com/tos/tos.php

7a.) Resource Usage

User may not:

1) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.

8) Run cron entries with intervals of less than 15 minutes.

9) Run any MySQL queries longer than 15 seconds. MySQL tables should be indexed appropriately.

8.) Bandwidth Usage

You are allocated a monthly bandwidth allowance. This allowance varies depending on the hosting package you purchase. Should your account pass the allocated amount we reserve the right to suspend the account until the start of the next allocation, suspend the account until more bandwidth is purchased at an additional fee, suspend the account until you upgrade to a higher level of package, terminate the account and/or charge you an additional fee for the overages. Unused transfer in one month cannot be carried over to the next month.

No they don't. But the control panel that they use is also very good in my opinion.

i'm with bluehost and they definitely don't suck. it's hard to say that one is better than the other in this category since the big ones are all pretty similar. i don't know about hostgator but bluehost was pretty quick to adopt a couple of new technologies during my time with them. i chose them initially partially because they supported things others weren't as quick to add support for.

in the past ive used slicehost.com and namecheap.com and had no problems with either of them.

you could also go to webhostingtalk.com and search for reviews there.

I've always used Asmallorange when not renting my own dedicated server. Never had a problem and any support tickets are typically answered within minutes. Now I rent my own quad core server, which I've had for the last 5 months with HiVelocity. I've been extremely happy with the service and network. I haven't had to contact them a single time for anything but I guess that's because I'm a systems administrator haha. Server has been up for 5 months with 100% uptime. Talk about reliability.

Lucky for you. I used to have a 5+ servers with them but in the beginning of the year I was tired of having ~85% uptime each month.

lol I can look over my filter for them and all you see is "Routing Issue..", "Can't ping servers", "Routing Issues with certain IPs" tickets for months and months.

But good to hear that they're not horrible for you. Wonder if they've improved somewhat. Or bothered to finish their website which last I saw, was effin awful.

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you've had with them. The only reason I rented my server from them is because of all the positive reviews on WebHostingTalk, well that and their crazy cheap pricing.

I've definitely been in your position with the poor downtime before, packet loss and just overall **** poor network performance when I colocated 30+ servers with Speakeasy. They used to have a top quality network, that is until BestBuy bought them out and their management took over. I worked for Speakeasy for two years prior to the buyout and we always lost sleep to make sure our customers were happy. I'm still sore about that buyout. /vent sorry!!
