Grand Theft Auto V set in Hollywood?

News by Robert Purchese

Grand Theft Auto V may be set in Hollywood, according to an idiosyncratic report on VG247.

The blog added that a reveal could happen at a Max Payne 3 event "soon".

Rockstar apparently had no comment to make on the matter. Surprise.

Grand Theft Auto IV - the world's fastest selling videogame before Modern Warfare 2 came along - was released in April 2008. Eurogamer editor Tom Bramwell awarded 10/10.

Sourcing EG for the news instead of VG247, as their post is painful to read. If you really want to though... http://www.vg247.com/2010/07/26/rumour-gta-v-is-set-in%E2%80%A6/

I hope they try something different this time, im getting bored of 'starting the game and arriving to the city after being in jail/an immigrant/other unspecified event, with an arbitrary lock on being able to go across the bridges to the other islands because of terrorist event or some accident, fighting your way up crime syndicate ladder' crap they pull every game, i love GTA but its wearing a bit thin now. How about having it from the other point of view being a cop or undercover cop trying to infiltrate crime syndicates or to stop some sort of terrorist threat.

Dunno is it?

At least try something different im not a game writer im sure they can come up with something better than "undercover cop in x situation", even Red Dead Redemption has the same story formula GTA has.

I love Rockstar but enough U.S cities already. I would even be happier with South America. And taking some leafs out of Saints Rows book wouldnt be to bad either and give GTA a funner appeal like its origins instead of the dating, bowling, relationships etc..

I disagree, I still find the crime stories interesting enough. Playing an undercover cop could be interesting, though I think playing a cop just wouldn't be GTA.

The crime stories are moderately interesting but every game has had the same concept, person x has returned to place y and has to start from the bottom, drive around a bit waiting for missions, go up the crime ladder, end up on top with lots of money.

I don't think the game would work the same if it were set in a different country.

Like if we had a GTA UK (I know there was GTA London but that doesnt count..) - crime is different. Guns are not used nearly as much, and you certaibly can't buy them. Plus police are different. They dont tell you to freeze and hold you up with guns etc for driving too fast. >.>

It's got to be in America.

Of course you can buy guns in the UK, shotguns, rifles and pistols. In GTA the main character hardly goes into a proper gun shop, buys a gun and waits a few days for clearing period does he?

I mean over the counter, haha. You can walk into a supermarket and order a shotgun in America, you can't do that here.

All that said though, the GTA formula just wouldn't work. It's mostly been based on muscle cars, big cities, and American-style events.

I bet they could make it work in London, and play on the 'British gangster' style. Sex shops, European gangs, Russians, Greeks, Jews, illegal gun stores, 'flying squad' etc.

I doubt it would be set in South London, with just kids robbing, stabbing and shooting each other.

Hollywood sounds good, if it's similar to Vice City.
