McCordRm
I'll start with myself. I don't mind a monthly fee as long as I'm getting enough out of it. I have paid my single-charge $50 for games and thrown them in the trash after a couple of mind-numbing hours. On the other side of the coin, I've paid my $15 a month for a game and played it for 4 years. Had I not spent that $15 a month on that game, I would have been eating out more (at LEAST $15 per meal), going to the movies more, drinking at the bar more, etc. So, for still being able to enjoy the hell out of myself... I fail to see where $15 a month for that entertainment could be viewed as a "waste".

I fail to see where $15 a month for that entertainment could be viewed as a "waste". The only game I've payed monthly for was Planetside. I really liked that game. But after several months, the lag during battles was unplayable. So basically I just completely wasted over $100. Why should we start paying monthly fees for every game coming out? You already have DLC which isn't even worth the prices a lot of time. If they charged monthly fees and you get DLC consistently, then maybe. But in reality, if I'm paying $60 for a new game, I shouldn't have to pay monthly fees. If they want to have free downloads or charge $10 and let the game stand on it's own merit, I'd gladly pay a monthly fee if it was reasonable. The fact is that they want the big up front paycheck from the casual gamer, them gouge the hardcore people that really like it also. I can get 15 movies a month from Redbox or a subscription to Netflix for $15 a month. Plus, what if you like to play a couple of different games. Where does the bloodsucking stop? homeboyrocketshoulders
I dont mind monthly fees really, I just hate the way they force you to pay double. If theres a monthly fee, the game should be available for download free, or available retail for maybe a few dollars as a convenience. You cant play it without a subscription anyways, so its not like they would be losing out on customers. If I have to pay $50 or whatever for a game, that game is mine. I shouldnt have to pay to play a game I've already paid for. What am I paying $50 for then, a dvd and some cardboard? I refuse to pay both on principle. Therefore, I've never played a game that required a monthly fee.
+Neowinian Subscriber² Posted July 27, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted July 27, 2010 I would only pay $5.00 a month for an online play. Being on Xbox 360 costs to much money with gold membership each year, so if they should charge anyone it should be ps3 users as they get their online play for free. Being on Xbox 360 costs to much money with gold membership each year, so if they should charge anyone it should be ps3 users as they get their online play for free. Ok... For me, I played Star Wars Galaxies for about 2 years. The reasons for moving away from it were: I wanted to save my money My real social life was suffering The population on the servers dived My opinion on MMOs now is that I'd be happy to try another one as well as foot the monthly fee, but I would expect additions to the game to be free downloadable content. The other way they could do it would be to use real money to buy virtual items instead of paying a monthly fee, but then I just wouldn't buy the items. Richard Hammond
Because PC games (apart from MMOs) have been free to play since the dawn of the first online multiplayer game. Now because Microsoft charges for Xbox Live and its relatively successful every developer/publisher wants a piece of the pie so they are trying to introduce pay to play models, it doesnt benefit the consumer. Colin-uk Veteran Posted July 27, 2010 Veteran Share Posted July 27, 2010 I dont mind the monthly fees mostly because i dont play MMOs really. I cant see why people are annoyed about them though, paying for the game, and then paying to play the game they just spent their money on. F2P MMOs arent too bad of an idea as long as they dont strip a lot of the main stuff out for the premium players.
Nick H. Supervisor Posted July 27, 2010 Supervisor Share Posted July 27, 2010 No. **** off! Jesus F2P MMOs need to die in a fire. Chill amigo, I was merely pointing out a way that some MMO's choose to price things. As the final bit of my comment suggests, I wouldn't choose that route myself. Osiris
whoa some firery discussions here. I was dead against mmo's and paying for the longest time, but yeah games have changed/evolved. Its more about ongoing entertainment now. Yes ive probably spent $500 on MMO's over the years but they have provided me with far more hours gameplay than the last 5 console games combined (and at equal the price). metal_dragen Veteran Posted July 27, 2010 Veteran Share Posted July 27, 2010 I used to be hardcore against monthly fees for a lot of the reasons already outlined by people. Then WoW came along. My friends all started playing it during the beta and at launch. They finally wore me down and got me playing a trial account - I signed up for a subscription and bought the game the next day. For me, it was a new experience, with my friends, and it was great fun. For me, the price was worth it for the 3 years I played. When I lost interest, I cancelled my sub and haven't looked back. I don't view the money as a waste because for those 3 years, I believe I got my money's worth in entertainment from the game. I'm not averse to paying a monthly fee going forward. But it does severely limit options as far as which game I choose to pay for. I don't have the time and money to invest in multiple games like this, so the decision on which to buy and play is an important one. Now, if they lowered the monthly fees, I'd be much more likely to at least give more games a shot at my wallet.
HawkMan
Comparing F2P MMP's to P2P MMO's the small monthly fee which is about the same as one or two cinema tickets is well worth it. On the other hand you have new solutions like APB. At first when I check the monthly price of APB, I thought they only had the hourly thing which annoyed me. but they do also have a full time monthly sub. Anyway, I cam to the conclusion that with my MMO playstyle that's a perfect solution, since I can play them a lot for short periods then I can leave them be for months and months. Massiveterra
There are monthly fees because people pay for them. Economics 101 If people don't buy them they won't sell them. Remember that petition to not buy MW2 for PC because they removed dedicated servers? Yeah, that went well.
Vice
I don't like paying monthly fees for MMORPG's because many of them fail to deliver new content for that fee. For example World of Warcraft which is undeniably the huge hitter in the MMO space. It's ?8.99 a month. For that ?8.99 what new features do I get? Mostly just re-workings of existing functions in the game. Buffing / Nerfing, changes to the UI. Sometimes they might add a new Dungeon. But 90% of the 'New Content' comes in an expansion which you have to pay for. That ?8.99 per month could buy me an entirely new game each month. And if I saved that ?8.99 I could get a really really good game every 2 months. A single Dungeon or a few new quests that last at most an hour for ?8.99 vs an entirely new game that I'll get 10-18 Hours out of? And in the case of online games (like TF2 which is often at ?8.99 in price) over 400 Hours of game play. I'm not adverse to paying a monthly subscription but only if they are going to continually release really great stuff, simply paying to keep being able to play a game I've already paid for? I'm not in to that.
Minifig
There's an old axiom, you get what you pay for. The higher quality an item is, the more you'll pay for it. I have no problems paying 180$ a year for an MMO if it's as high quality as WoW.
