Sony Confirms PlayStation Move Pricing For The UK, Is Very Reasonable

Recommended Posts

Yeah, you could spin it that way

Or the retailers are competing and willing to take a smaller margin with the expectation of volume sales.

Really? Is that why you saw so many retailers "competing" on the price of the Wii, or the PS3 or Xbox360 when they first came out? No, sorry. It's not just spin () when a brand new revolutionary product is seeing discounts before its even released. It means that the retailers expect to have enough product sitting on the shelves that they want to entice customers to buy it from them instead of somewhere else.

What?! Of course retailers don't compete on console price at launch in the same way...those margins are tiny to begin with. Accessories have much bigger margins which give them room to cut the price in the first place!

Or maybe there is lower than expected cost to the Move. There is a lot of reasons.

They certainly want to push the Move out as well. They need the market to be saturated with Moves as well so that 3rd party developers will see that as a viable and profitable market. Then Sony and retailers can reap some rewards.

UK boxart, looks like it's a banner at the top for anything with Move functionality

Those look like the worst games ever......

Corrected ;)

Singstar and Buzz are both pretty solid titles carried over from the PS2 days. Both are great fun party games, so worst games ever is unlikely here I think.

Hehe, sadly my definition of good party games would exclude those sort of games as I am an adult and not a 11 year old tweenie ;)

I don't think you're understanding. You'd think that something new that a high percentage of gamers (according to that poll) will be picking up would not be discounted. If I had a business and I knew that a product was going to sell out or at least sell well I'd try to make the most money when the making's good (read: launch). No matter how great or small the margin is you'd want to charge as much as the market can bear and/or the law allows. In the US that would be MSRP. If a store nearby is selling it for less, good. Let them run out of stock and make less money then the rest of the people will come buy from me at a higher price.

The fact that they are cutting price means they don't expect it to sell well. Now, it might still sell well, but the expectation is not there. It's just interesting to see the people saying "OMG A poll says the Move will be the best thing evar and everyone is gonna buy it!!!" are the same people posting how good it is that they Move price is getting discounted. It seems there's a small disconnect in basic business sense.

you have no idea how retailers work. they drop the price of products to bring people into the store. they go into the store they are more likely to see something else they may want (online or retail) and scoop it up at regular cost. This makes up for their loses and bring some customer loyalty in becasue they got a good deal on something they really wanted and ended up picking up something else to make them even happier. Now more then likely those same people are likely to come back more and more.

it has NOTHING to do with it being a bad product. when madden comes out and people drop the price at launch from 6999 to 5999 does that mean madden sucks and its not going to sell well?

if we go by your logic not a single best boy store would EVER EVER sell a laptop because laptops/desktops have next to no margin on them. it's those overpriced cables that keep them in business.

TBH both scenarios are true, neither are invalid marketing tricks tbh. Some retailers may be going for undercut and accepting a lower margin with the idea they will sell more, the other may not, its not like anyone can see the move selling crazy fast at launch really especially given its limited appeal to the more hardcore players out there. That and the fact those who want wand based interactivity will have bought a wii already, not to say its superior per say, its just wii was there first.

You could've made your point by bringing up a sensible argument like ZeroHour did but, no, you decided to show your ignorance with the personal attack method. Just so you know, I've worked as a retail manager in the hardware, software and games department for a national big box store as well as owning my own computer company. Trust me, I know how retailers work. Let me explain something you're overlooking. Software titles generally don't sell out for extended periods of time. If a title sells out at launch, it's usually followed by more shipments shortly thereafter. So, for all intents and purposes, software can be bought anywhere and is therefore more likely to be used as a loss leader if the situation arises. Hardware, on the other hand, doesn't come back in stock as quickly. Bear in mind, I'm talking about unique hardware, not hardware like a laptop where if the Toshiba model sells out you can get a similarly priced Compaq model. If a retailer feels that this hardware is going to generate massive sales to the point of selling out, they will hold the price as long as they can to make up for the loss leaders that they use.

My logic has nothing to do with what products they're selling, particularly a common stocked item like a laptop.

Lastly, I never said that it was a bad product. What I'm saying in my post, which granted is just my opinion, is that if the Move is seen as being so hotly anticipated that it has it's own thread about a poll being taken, why would a retailer discount such a hot product? I'm arguing the image of the product that was portrayed in other threads that seems to be discounted by this thread.

lolfail an American who doesn't understand how UK e-tailers work laugh.gif

when it comes down to it, all retailers are the same no matter where in the world they are.

there was no personal attack, if it seemed that way my bad. You were alluding to it earlier that the move can't be a good product if they discounting it and i replied with what the possible reason it could be. out of that entire rebuttle you didn't really counter what i said, just more of an insight of how the retail world works. I don't think a hot product has anything to do with it. It's just another new gaming product and retailers are trying to get the on up on each other. a retailer discounting a product before it's released, especially in the gaming industry, does not mean AT ALL that the product isn't going to sell well.

also the fact the launch is still months away and sony hasn't been really advertising it yet on TV (i haven't see any ads for it) where as kinect ads i am seeing.

In the end, I feel Move, like Kinect, will fail. So I don't know why the bother.

(Y) i agree with that one. though i think kinect has A LOT more potential.

OK, apology accepted. Also didn't mean to respond in like so apologies on my end for misunderstanding you. The point I was trying to make from my original post had more to do with the topic that said so many people were ready to buy it compared to the subject of this one. I don't think it will be bad. I have a Wii because I think it's good for those types of games and I think the Move will be a better Wii, but a Wii nonetheless. That doesn't make it bad.

As for the ads, I haven't seen any Kinect ads yet. Is it the same thing as what we saw in E3?

In what respect does it have more potential? If you're talking about variety of games then Move has got to have more potential because it combines extremely accurate motion sensing (better than Wii's) with a camera that can do some of what Kinect can..

Of course, I'm interested in your argument...

I don't want Kinect to sell because it's far too expensive. How anybody can buy it without the knowledge developers will take it anywhere is beyond me.

Kinect obviously has more potential if it can do things like sign language (to name one), no? How in the world Move is going to do sign language with two freaking glowing orbs? How will Move do things like Dance Central or Your Shape where Kinect uses fully body scanning?

How can Move do any of the Kinect stuff? The first rule of Kinect is no controller and Move needs a controller. Move is just Wii HD (in graphics and accuracy) whereas Kinect is next step in motion sensing but mostly Wii types of games for launch.

with everything said, I still feel that Move, like Kinect is terribly overpriced.

It doesn't actually need a controller because tech demos show that the PlayStation Eye is capable of tracking your body. Yes not as well as Kinect, which is why I said it can do some of the things Kinect can.

And I'd like to see Kinect do sign language in its released form (and not in the higher spec development form); it doesn't have the accuracy to track fingers, and as far as I know...sign language uses fingers quite often.

From DigitalFoundry, that has seen and played with both Move and Kinect:

What it boils down to is a choice. In our view, PlayStation Move is the most flexible, versatile motion controller for either HD console. It's patently superior to Wii and indeed the MotionPlus upgrade. But as we've seen from the launch titles, the utilisation of the wand thus far falls way short of the superb concepts Sony is dreaming up in its R&D labs.

Kinect is something different and wholly removed from Move and the Wiimote. The fact that it's ideally suited to fitness and dance titles in a way that neither of the competing systems can match may well be enough on its own to guarantee success. However, in the longer term, it's the system's basic demand for innovation from developers that may well be the making of it.

Kinect can do a particular set of games, like fitness and dancing, that don't require precision. But Move can do both that and core games that require precision and that require feedback, like shooters, racers etc

Yeah, true for Move too...because as it says the launch titles won't be anything to brag about.

watch miniority report. someone hacks the kinect to make it work with PCs and i'll love to see what they do in terms of UI navigation with the thing. Imagine kinect hooked up via a projector? It would be crazy. And in terms of potential, i do not mean it has nothing anything to do with games, but in term of everything else you could do with the thing.
