Internet Paranoia

hahaha

Nobody wants to break into your PC, no matter how fancy your rent vs buy excel spreadsheet is, they are simply not interested.

i've been basically saying the same thing forever. why bother using firewall software? you don't have anything interesting to take ffs. i didnt use firewall software up until the built in XP one, and thats only on because its default as on, and I was never hacked.. not in the years i had the internet.

ppl are just to goddamn paranoid. your stuff isn't that exciting or interesting to worry about.

i personally dont care...

the only firewall i have is from my NAT router, and i plan on keeping it that way.

Couldnt agree more, and I wrote exactly the same thing in my dissertation, people just dont realise that unless u specifically mess with the wrong people, your machine is nothing to them.

However, I've seen corporate boxes owned and used a FTP servers, game servers etc.

I'm not paranoid... I never read the logs unless the firewall is giving me grief.

Some of the things there were hilarious.

n00bie question, but what is "FFS"?

I basically said this, a while back. I got absolutely flamed for it by the Neowin community. He's different? Edited by Dessimat0r

I don't use any firewall whats the point, I don't have nothing they can steal, that would ruin my life. Nor do I use virus software, I just back up what is important, to me. I have never got a virus and If I ever did a easy format will fix it.

ummm. then why do i get attacked about 3 times a day with all kinds of backdoor and trojans. i don't have anything interesting. or is this different from what you guy's are talking about? :p

REPEAT AFTER ME: "I AM NOT GETTING ATTACKED! NOBODY IS GOING AFTER ME! I AM PARANOID N00B WITH A FIREWALL"

did you even bother reading that article?!

what your firewall is showing is just connection ATTEMPTS. with or without firewall, unless you have those backdoor/trojans installed, those connections will fail.

 ......... i got it the first time. and i don't really care, cuz only antivirus program i got is Internet Security so i have both and i never really pay attention to it or bother to update. why do i have it? i feel this emptyness w/out the antivirus program, not the firewall. why couldn't i just buy the antivirus program itself? because i got the internet security for FREE! besides i download from IMESH once in a while to try out stuff. :)

i use a firewall, but i don't pay extra special attention to it. it kinda just sits there.

for most people, especially grandma who's on 56k and just checks email, firewalls aren't necessary. but if i were running a server i'd definately have a firewall running and i'd check it every once in a while too.

you would just install a firewall and open needed port?

if that's the case you might as well not install firewall at all.

I don't use a firewall on my computer to try to stop people from having access to my computer (the proxy takes care of that crap alone), but to stop programs that I don't want accessing the internet (WMP9 comes to mind).

another reason why i sort of want a firewall is to know what programs are trying to access the internet.. helped me when gator, cydoor, emule, and a bunch of other spyware crap tried to install on my pc. it's just easy for me.

I keep a firewall for one simple reason, to prevent attacks when/if I get a trojan. I remember when I posted on a message board on how to remove a certain trojan. After that post, the hacking attempts skyrocketed! My firewall saved me by preventing those connections.

using nat with my router and antivirus software thats about it and never had any problems. When I did try a firewall it was more hassle than it was worth

Software firewalls are a joke... Get a real firewall! And believe this... if someone is good enough, nothing will stop them from getting into your PC. But rest assured that these people doesn't give a damn what you have on your PC. They aren't after your hidden porn folder or your Britney Spears MP3s so get over it! If you are really that paranoid then you shouldn't be on the net anyways. Oh, and you probably should think about boarding up your windows because someone might see in. I'll bet those kind of people protect their cars with "The Club." If I worked for an ISP and someone kept calling me about "attempts" then I would probably have a pretty busy night because I would make sure to nail them just for buggin' me. "Every time I go to your website I get 'attacked' on port 80. What's that all about!?" Friggin' idiots!

I run a server actually. My only firewall is iptables. Packet filtering.

I just block every port except the ones I need you to see. (web, ftp, ssh).

I don't have "excel sheets". I don't even have excel.

I am paranoid, yes - and proud of it. However I am not clueless. I keep my machines behind NAT.

I am a network administrator. Professional Linux expert.

I don't want port 139 net sends. I don't want someone gaining SSH access and running an IRC server.

Call me stupid for not running around the net with no holes barred. There's stuff I want joe bloe to see, and stuff I don't.

Grandma doesn't care about her port 139, for she does not even share files and ain't got no network.

Who cares.

I run a server.

There's a world between grandma and me -- am I stupid for running a firewall?

Someone drills my SSH... I don't complain. Someone tries for for days to connect to my FTP... i don't care as long as it causes no hindrance to my users.

Someone does a ../../../cmd.exe?+dir attack on my apache server? I don't give a damn. It could be code red just being clueless.

Someone send insanely large packets to my DNS server for really long, leading in a DoS... then I'll complain.

Try to break something, yeah. Break it, I'll report.

The problem is not firewalls. Firewalls are just fine. They're not stupid, they do what they're supposed to.

The problem is actually the users using the firewall.
