+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted August 2, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted August 2, 2010 Wedbush analyst and all round **** stirrer Michael Pachter has made a number of statements about multiplayer gaming, saying that he expects premium paid features to be added to many major releases. His latest musings claim that, although he does not know what form these new monetisations will take, he expects it to split online players, with half of current players paying for premium versions and the others sticking to the limited free multiplayer. If the 15 million people which Pachter estimates currently play 10 hours of online console multiplayer a week were to be cut in half by the introduction of premium services, 7.5 million people paying $5 a month would increase publisher revenue by $450 million, he guesses. "We think that premium online multiplayer content will be the event that turns the negative tide of industry sales around," Pachter said, also saying that the players who feel disenfranchised by charges would be likely to buy more games to make up for the loss of online multiplayer. He cites Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer as being its primary selling point, saying "Activision laments the missed opportunity to somehow monetise the incremental gameplay" and estimating that charging online players $0.06 per hour would have made an additional $120 million for Activision (don't tell Kotick that for god sake) within half a year. Even though Rockstar have not announced their next game, Pachter says that developer/publishers next title would have a new payment model - as would other big future titles. "We think that scheduled releases like Call of Duty Black Ops, Medal of Honor and Halo Reach, and unscheduled releases like Grand Theft Auto 5 all will contain the opportunity for gamers to pay more to the publishers," he crystal balled. So what are your thoughts? Would you be happy to pay for multiplayer on top of xbox live and such? Would you get through more games if there wasn't any multiplayer? And is Pachter talking out of his ass again? Express your views in the comments section. Source: http://e4g.info/news...or-multiplayer/
BoneyardBrew Member Posted August 2, 2010 Member Share Posted August 2, 2010 Hell no. Who in their right mind would rather pay for multiplayer? What are we paying $60+ on these games for if we're going to be forced to pay more just to play the entire game?
_I am Reptar
So I pay for: 1) Game 2) Live Gold 3) Multiplayer fee JUST TO PLAY ONLINE? No thanks. Shesh.
Darth Laidher
Hell no. Who in their right mind would rather pay for multiplayer? Isn't it bad enough game prices are $60+? +1 i'm for people paying the 5 bucks for the online code if they didn't buy new. but monthly fees and all that no. Hah, that's what the Xbox gets, PC and PSN is basically Game + MP Fee, which is still lame. This is why I <3 Valve, free DLC, game is <?20 and no paying for multiplayer. treemonster
i'd also like to emphasiize the dividing the community thing. this would kill mp for most games that aren't super huge. sure a game like mw2 might be able to profit from this, but this would be far from typical, and the longevity of the already trunicated commmunity would be much shorter. Crompee
half of me says lolz half of me says ouch. 6 cents a n hour to play? literally nickel and diming here. He said he estimates 10 hours a week, so 6cents an hour means that to play online you'd be charged roughly $30 a year. So you'll be paying $90 for a game which costs $60 now. etempest
Talk about backlash. PS3 users are use to non-mmo's being free online pay and will be vocal. XboxLive users will be very vocal about paying for XboxLive and a separate fee on top since users will be feel that XboxLive is suppose to be paying for this service. I will NOT pay for online access on a per-game basis unless it's an MMO, and then I have to really enjoy it to justify paying the fee.
kennyout
**** no, the momment this happens, I will stop playing games that put "Multiplayer" anywhere on the box because that will mean that the developers will short end the single player experience. OH WAIT.....FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU In all seriousness most online multiplayer games already do this to some degree, but forcing people to choose to having their ass kicked by ones who do pay for such "privilage" online would just lower the amount of people willing to buy into these. It is a bad business move in my honest opinion for every game company to jump in on and will possibly lower the amount of people willing to even buy a product if they know they are going to have to pay even more....just think of how hard it is to get parents to pay for their kid's addiction to WOW....and then be told "but mommy/daddy I NEED TO GET THIS TO PLAY AND NOT GET RAPED!!!!" Darth Laidher
The minute this happens I will never play online again, i'll go back to the NES days and just game by myself or with a second person.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted August 2, 2010 Veteran Share Posted August 2, 2010 If it ever does happen I will just give up gaming most likely, at least the multiplayer aspect anyway. And I certainly wouldn't be buying more games to make up for it, in fact I'd be buying less. Seeing as I only buy games like Battlefield (and CoD back in the day) for their MP. Couldn't give a **** about their SP so saves me ?40.

I'd buy a lot of sports games though, those to me have a high replay value because you can customize leagues and stuff like that and play as much as you want and hardly come up with the same result all the time.Yeah maybe you will blow the cpu out in the game but the game will still be fun to play because the cpu isn't linear. So basically id probably buy every new sports game that comes out just for SP, the first person shooters, action genres would get very little of my money.
