No Nintendo presser for gamescom, Microsoft

Recommended Posts

Nintendo has confirmed to VG247 that it will hold no gamescom press conference this year, while Microsoft has said it will soon solidify "plans".

MS on hold for Cologne

Microsoft's told VG247 today that it's "still finalizing" its plans for the show.

More concrete details should be given to press next week, a spokesperson said.

Last year, the firm held a Peter Molyneux-centric press conference, in which he revealed Fable III.

Nintendo strikes out

Nintendo has now confirmed it won't be having a press conference at gamescom this year, and will just have a stand at the show. This is a repeat of Nintendo's gamescom set-up in 2009.

The platform holder isn't the only games firm to hold fire on the German event. In the past month, publishers Sega and Capcom have confirmed they'll have no gamescom presence at all.

Sega told VG247 that it was pulling out for "commercial" reasons, meaning Sonic 4, Vanquish, Valkyria Chronicles II and Shogun 2 won't be on show in Cologne later this month.

Capcom, meanwhile, said it couldn't "justify" showing a small line-up at gamescom, so Dead Rising 2, Sengoku BASARA: Samuari Heroes, Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and others will be absent from the show.

Sony and EA are green to go

But SCEE and EA, in contrast, have fully committed to gamescom 2010, both holding their press conferences on August 17.

While it's mostly unknown what to expect from SCEE this year ? compared to last year and the Slimgate andprice-cut scenario ? attendees will be watching for new trailers from stars such as GT5 and inFamous 2, as well as new game reveals.

A PSP2 reveal is unlikely.

As for EA, it will be debuting Crysis 2's multiplayer at the show, as well as airing Dragon Age 2 for the first time.

EA will go first with its press conference at 4.00pm CET (3.00pm BST) on August 17, followed by Sony at 6.00pm CET (5.00pm BST).

There really isn't any need for an event in-between E3 and TGS like this, it's no wonder so many don't bother to show anything.

There's hardly any progress made to show anything different from E3, and not enough time to show something new like they can at TGS.

It's the biggest EU show, E3 is USA.

Lot's of big announcements at it (especially from European publishers), it just seems Sony do more than the others. Nintendo will have **** all to show now, but MS could make an effort.

TGS is heavily focussed on Japan/Japanese Publishers.

Word is possibly Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 at Gamescom.

Yeah I know it's for the EU guys (and yes, I know what E3 is ;)), but that doesn't mean anything when lots of them already showed off their stuff in June.

I remember last year they had the same GoW3 demo from E3 at every major event. What's the point in that? They wasted so much money doing it.

Nintendo are certainly not low on anything to show this year, my guess is they are thinking the same as me and that it'd be a complete repeat of E3 and wasted money. If anything bring back Space World for Ninty and Sony can host their own event seeing as that's what Gamescom already is.

Edit: also TGS is for all of them, even Microsoft have made big appearances and announcements at it before.

I have to say, you can never advertise too much.

TGS...that is a show that Microsoft continues to invest more and more in. I wouldn't be surprised if MS has the biggest showing at TGS some year.

  • 2 weeks later...

*shrug* Sony usually is the only first-party publisher to have a major showing at GC due to SCEE (So you'll see more EyePet (+ Move), more HOME, Singstar, etc.). SCEA shows off at E3, plus megaton games along with any major hardware announcements, and TG gets the SCEJ games.

Yeah it's basically Sony an EA feast, sucks if you don't care about either, is awesome if you do.

GT5 will make Gamescom worth it on it's own for me.

No surprise, cause there is none! Or at least none ready to be announced.

GC = snooze fest of the events

Agreed with this. Though Microsoft is making some Games for Windows announcements. Not too excited about that though.
