Setting up PayPal / a user database for beginners

Question

Hi,

I'm creating a website for a friend selling access to their online resources. It's fairly cheap and doesn't require "unbeatable" security, although I'd like to set up a fairly secure system where each user has their own username and password to access the protected areas of the site. There are two separate areas and users can buy access to one, the other or both.

I'm intending to use PayPal for payments as it's secure and well-respected and am open to suggestions for a user management system (I don't want to write my own really). I note that when creating a button in PayPal there's an option for technical HMTL variables. Therefore, I was just wondering if it's possible to make the "on successful purchase" webpage [this is what paypal send the users to on successful purchase] automatically add the username (say the email given the user to buy the item) and a random password to the system. The user management system should let them change it at a later date.

I've found www.phpdeadlock.com which looks fairly good, has anyone used it before?

Failing that, do you think it is too insecure to simply have a standard username and password for each area which the users are emailed once they successfully purchase a license? Perhaps simply executed using .htaccess?

I'm not new to web design or PHP but have never set-up a system like this before so would be grateful for any guidance from wiser members!

Thanks!

Wowl
