It only ... delays

Aside from online games, you do realize you don't have to patch games to play them, correct? LBP is still playable offline or in creation mode without the patches. I almost never patch right away, just in case it breaks something else, but I haven't had an issue like you guys describe except when I had LBP at my brother's house, but that had more to do with the fact he has DSL and a ****ty wireless router.

The auto update is sweet on PSN for sure. We wouldn't need auto-update if the system was faster, and the patches and installs were implemented better. They are just putting a bandaid on the real issue.

I've actually had worse than this. While downloads from PSN are amazingly slow compared to anything else in my house, when I first got my PS3 it would demand that nothing else used the internet or it would shut down the entire network. It stopped doing that after a couple weeks but I honestly don't know if it is the hardware, servers or what. My PS3, as much as I want to like it, has given me some of the weirdest things I've ever seen. I am also on about a 20mb connection and it takes ages to get some things. I've all but stopped using my PS3 cause every time I try to play it I am always faced with an update.

Hopefully now Sony have implemented these updates that just download what you need, rather than the whole lot again, it will mean downloading 10-20MB each time rather than 200 which will save everyone a considerable amount of time.

I must be one of the few around here who can actually max out my connection through my PS3.

Curious, how did you go about testing the speed of your download speed of updates over PSN on your PS3?

Use PDM and problem solved.

Of course it's just another "bandaid" as Brian put it... don't expect Sony to do anything about their servers anytime soon (I'm in the US as well btw).

This. Have to agree this will reduce the waiting time.

In "test connection", it gives you up / down speeds. I run around 9.5Mbps.

I didn't know "test connection" existed. Nice. Thanks, I am going to give that a try when I get home.

I don't get max speeds from PSN here in Germany unless I load at night but I'm not gonna complain about this, only one thing really angers me concerning PS3 updates.

If you download a game update my dear PS3, let me do something else in the meantime. Like when I download a few Little Big Planet updates, let me play inFamous or something else, download in background and after it's finished tell me I can play Little Big Planet now!^^

Nice to see people agreeing in the PS section for once. I'm in the latter as well, on a 18Mbps connection and usually only getting at max 2Mbps from PSN. I have a wireless-n router and every other wireless device gets the full connection.

I'm not sure if the Slim's are better (fatty for me!), but I would hope they are. I think it's one part ****ty network and one part ****ty/cheap hardware.

Some people don't have hours and hours to dedicate to gaming, and when I want to play it is mostly on impulse.

With mandatory installs, frequent PS3 system patches that take ages to download and install, and game updates, it just basically makes the system useless for me. It causes me to play it less, which has the adverse effect of taking it even longer to update when I decide to play it, and then I play it even less. :p

Posting this because honestly, this is the main reason I never play my Playstation 3 when I actually have the time to do it.

You aren?t forced to update. You?ll lose access to PSN, though. But if just want to play ModNation, you don?t have to update the system or the game. Mandatory installs are another story and so are downloaded game if you don?t have them already.

Yeah there is that option. I can see my speed as I bridge my connection via my PC and can then see what download rates the PC is getting and pushing through to the PS3

i really dont understand everyone's problem w/ PSN - my downloads are always fast. always. just yesterday i downloaded the Mafia 2 demo at 1MB/s. System updates are very welcomed to me - and still download fast.

if a game has to install to the hard drive, i dont mind. i seem to always have something else i can do while it installs. who just sits there watching it? i could do some laundry or another chore while it installs

i really dont understand this guy's impatience. are we that busy these days?

I've had to download a lot today... LBP, FF8, Earthworm Jim, Savage Moon, PJ Shooter, and Vegas Poker. Had no problems with speeds at all. I guess it's really bipolar or something.

I can download a 1GB movie/demo/update off PSN in about 10 minutes and I've got a 10Mb connection. That would take about 5 times longer when I used to live in Alberta, so maybe it does have something to do with location.

heh - this is great. i downloaded the 381MB DLC for Alan Wake on 360 last night... it took over 2 hours. how is it that the 360 is so much faster than then PS3?

i know i know - the moral of this thread is that everyone's experience is different. Got it.
