It only ... delays

heh - this is great. i downloaded the 381MB DLC for Alan Wake on 360 last night... it took over 2 hours. how is it that the 360 is so much faster than then PS3?

i know i know - the moral of this thread is that everyone's experience is different. Got it.

Wow! It takes me a few minutes, either your connection sucks or it's XBL.

Except that many many more people have a poor experience with PSN than XBL.

On a messageboard the "many many" statistics basically break down as

360 owner = 360 is fast, PS3 is slow

PS3 owner = PS3 is fast, 360 is slow

I feel for you guys. I've never waited for more than 30 seconds for a game update, and 2 minutes for a complete dashboard update. It's one of the things I'll freely admit that MS has the upper hand on.

Yeah, it sucks.

But I love XBL updates :)

i think you just summed it up.

i hope my experience on XBL last night was a one-off. Usually it's pretty fast.

are those with slow speeds sure their routers are not causing any issue? is it slow when you directly connect it to the modem?

also, a patch will only download as fast as the servers can handle sending it out. If it is a new patch, and many are trying to get it, well, hell, even valve can't get that right :p

But when you have to pay for a service, I would hope it is faster or better in some way to the free service. Microsoft can throw more $$$ towards bandwidth and servers to alleviate the stress and keep speeds fast. If their service was slow, you have a right to complain. The Sony service is free, so complaining is pretty petty and stupid, because you could have nothing at all for free as well :p

+1 No bias here, just cold hard truth.

On another note, the Wii online store is damn slow too. Worse than PSN.

I downloaded a 500+ MB patch for MAG yesterday. It took less than 5 minutes to download (But much longer to install :( ). With the PS3 speed test, I get 14.3Mbps down and 2.5Mbps up.

Yeah I've got both and I can't tell you how many sign-in problems we have. Its a real pain in the ass when you're booted from a game of COD:MW because the PSN decided to sign you out. On top of that all downloads are slow. XBL runs like a dream on the other hand.

I've still heard way more complaints everywhere about PSN than about XBL by people who own both or own just the PS3. This isn't new news, so don't act like you don't know there are issues with PSN that just aren't there with XBL.

Yeah the long updates are a pain but ultimately, i get to play online for nothing and the PS3 does have lots of good features. That said i love the Xbox 360 and may buy myself another someday!

I am in the US, I have a 25mb connection, and the downloads over PSN are horrid. Yet the Xbox and PC downloads are instant. That is the case with everyone I know with a PS3 as well, and we are all in the US.

I don't think it's location necessarily. It's probably the way the servers are setup at Sony. But this is a known issue for the majority of people, so I don't see why this can't be addressed.

Same here. I leave the PS3 alone almost every time I turn it on so it can download all the updates and patches and go do something else. Then when I come back I just have to sit through the install which takes a bit of time as well.

Is there a way to make it so it automatically installs when the download is over?

Yes. Start download, then turn it off via the XMB menu. It'll give the option to turn off after download, and it will automatically install: this goes for patches, firmware updates, videos, music, demos, trailers, etc.

For me:

Xbox Live

Playstation Network

Wii Network

It's not my router, as I have all ports opened for the two top consoles. Maybe in lala world, there are wonderful bunnies that speed up the mandatory install times, constant updates, and system updates/installs, but over here in non-bias world, it takes forever.

I'm sure the Wii would suck even more if it had this same problem, but luckily it makes a wonderful paperweight. It should be usable in a few months though.

More like:

Xbox Live

Playstation Network

(Every other service available for online game goes here.)

Wii Network, it's just horrid, but least the download and install animation OWNS!

I also have all three and I can attest to both PSN and the Wii network being slow as hell. Downloads take forever. Updates take forever. It's like neither of them take it seriously at all. My Xbox updates download and install very quickly. Xbox Live downloads are much faster than PSN downloads.

Never seen the speed as an issue tbh (in sweden).. sure, I could see the problem if you own multiple consoles and maybe turn one of them on once a month and is faced with patch hell :p The ps3 is the only current gen system I own.. I use it daily.. the last patch I had (firmware or game) must have been weeks ago. I have other issues with Sony, but this sure isn't one of them.

Well, I am happy with this totally free service, that I still easily connect to at around 10mbps. I prefer to pay nothing and get something than the other way around :p ya ya, xbox you pay something and get something as well, but it is basically the same thing

While I use that to do other things, while still getting what you paid for... your point is? Spending money on things others get for free, well, paint it in whatever picture you want and look at it how you want, I'm not here to convince or degrade anyone for their decision. Just saying the service is perfectly fine for me, especially for it being free.

how did that go over your head?

You can't really use that comparison though. I'm not spending my money on something others get free because nobody gets XBL Gold for free. PSN is a different service for a different console (and honestly one I wouldn't pay money for given my ongoing experience with it) that has a completely different dynamic than XBL so its not fair to say I'm paying for something others get free.

I get what you're saying and not paying is nice, but I have no issues paying for XBL given what I get back.
