drlacus
The amount of stupidity in this thread is astounding  Take your conspiracy theories to area 51 and let us talk about real science in this forum, please. Stopping international travel would have done nothing as by the time the potenial of H1N1 was known the virus was already in most countries. Banning travel would have just made the economic impact of the outbreak even worse. Quite frankly we didn't know how bad H1N1 was going to be, although we knew how bad it could be. The scary headline figures reported in the press were worst-case scenarios, not accurate predictions of what was definitely going to happen. Influenza is a deadly disease, you just have to look at past pandemics to see that. Actually, NDM-1 is a gene, not an organism in its own right. Right, you obviously don't know what a pandemic is, do you? A pandemic (from Greek πᾶν pan "all" + δῆμος demos "people") is an epidemic of infectious disease that is spreading through human populations across a large region; for instance a continent, or even worldwide. Influenza It could be deadly, but for instance, haemorrhagic pneumonia is a rare outcome. NMD - 1 NDM - 1 is a gene wich transcripts and translates to a metallo - β - lactamase. β - lactamase enzymes are capabale to destruct most of our antibiobiotics wich are derived from the classic β lactam antibiotics like penicillin. It opens the β - lactam ring. Most of our attempts to eliminate the β - lactam resistence begin to fail as more and more "tricks" like this enzyme appear. The NDM - 1 gene could be transfered from one bacteria to another easily because it is stored on a plazmid. The worst problem is that we don't have any new antibiotics to eliminate these multidrug resistant types. So please stop the insane antibiotic abuse and don't kill us all  !!! Pandemic Trust me. I know what pandemic is. I was trying to compare the numbers...

Right, so when you said it wasn't a pandemic you were... joking? So please stop the insane antibiotic abuse and don't kill us all  !!! Indeed, it makes me a sad panda to see people chugging antibiotics when they don't need them - especially for viral infections(!)

chrismgtis
It's going to obviously significantly effect those who aren't in good health. I knew plenty of people that had it and they all admitted that it was a joke and just left them feeling under the weather for a few days. That's pretty much the standard opinion of H1N1. The media blew it incredibly out of proportion. No matter what we're talking about, any type of virus or cold or whatever can result in the death of those that aren't in great health to begin with. And that's pretty much exactly how severe H1N1 was. Conspiracy? I doubt that, but hey it's possible knowing this retarded nation and how corrupt it really is. Personally I think it was just a bunch of pathetic media and media peons blowing it out of proportion and spewing absolute BS when they needed to shut their mouth and report facts instead of trying to cause a panic. The bad thing is, people are that stupid. They will panic. Media ONLY reports the bad stuff and not the good. Ever since every American had cable TV in their home, they think that just because the media reports a stabbing, that stabbings have become a pandemic. Indeed, it makes me a sad panda to see people chugging antibiotics when they don't need them - especially for viral infections(!) I think it's was too small problem to call it pandemic. You could generate fear and money with it. Sure it's good for drug market, but... You need antibiotics to cure the "side-effects" of some viral infections. It's important to help your immun system. Harmless bacterial infections could be deadly when you fight with the virus and after it gets rushed with some nice bacteria.

Not for viral infections like the common cold or relatively mild seasonal 'flu, though.
drlacus
I know it could be stuffed into the definition of pandemic, but look at the other pandemic diseases. TBC, polio, plague. You see the difference ?

Ambroos
In our school (about 500 students and staff combined) we had about 60 people who had H1N1. None serious though, response was pretty fast.
