Design Critique Required

Question

Currently still working on a little project, but I'm a bit iffy on my design... Any tips? I'd like to go with a lighter colour scheme (white based) and probably move the markup around a bit to get rid of the two side by sides... If I do continue with this design I need to edit the PHP from one side to only draw from a certain category on my wordpress blog, and the other side to only parse my neowin posts... Haven't fixed that yet. What do you think?

EDIT:

Theme has been lightened, design streamlined into one column. Looks a lot sharper in my opinion

Lookin' good! I have a little critique, though:

I like the font for lowercase letter the title, but the font and design for the uppercase letters puts me off a little bit. Maybe just keep the uppercase letters white like the others?

Also, maybe move the navigation links up to the top of the page somewhere? They're easier to access that way, especially if the page is more vertically oriented.

Nice progress, overall!

I have to agree with Joe here.

The overall design is sharp. But the fonts are killing me. I'm using Georgia on my site right

now with some shadow effect for the menu, but you can see how it looks normally down

in the content area: http://www.richardmccord.com

It's not the gold-colored lead letter, though. I think that's fine for standing out. It really

emphasizes the BSD in a logo fashion.

Cool guys... I want to maintain the logo I think, and use the orange just for an accent on a white design... I'm also going to move away from the whole fixed length thing, I don't think I'll mind a scroller... I was having trouble with fonts though, I'm taking a look at your link McCordRm.

Just be aware that I'm still in the designing process, myself.

My font choice just happens to be something I don't plan to change.

I think it's pretty easy on the eyes.

I've changed the layout as per some of the suggestions... Let me know what you think of it now... Rather than two columns it's one and looks cleaner imo

I think the "social" buttons on top are a bit large, I'd also try to place them elsewhere.

your current color scheme could word with a lighter gray box for the text or something.

The text boxes are transparent PNGs, I plan on making the whole thing lighter still, I just have trouble with general colour schemes. I MIGHT place the buttons up beside the header like they used to be and leave them the same size, but that would make the entire site wider. The social buttons are a main feature as the site is just going on a business card, I might make them smaller and place the name of the service beside them and have them span the page as well.

More colours(or colors) would be nice :D

Meta(posted, date, author) looks exactly the same as your content(excerpt). Try doing something there :D

I don't know, just saying :p
