Pergo
Okay... I have a serious problem. On Winmx, lately I have been unable to send files on there, but I could receive. It still makes it hard because I like sharing, and I need to trade with some users... I also cannot send on IRC, and no one can connect to my Serv-U Ftp Server. Anyways, my problem is simple to explain, yet baffeling to solve. The problem all started a few days ago when I was trying to access this secret network on IRC, my friend suggested I use MultiProxy.. so I got it, and found a quick and easy list of proxies and MultiProxy runs off the base IP of '127.0.0.1'. I found out I dont need the that special network, so I tried using the uninstall feature that came with MultiProxy, didn't work. So I deleted the whole folder. Whats happening is that the Multiproxy IP '127.0.0.1' is still covering my IP. My IP is '68.32.xxx.xx' i'll just keep the rest to myself. What the thing is, users and programs can't ping onto my real IP, they keep getting the 127.0.0.1... and they're unable to connect. I tried reinstall multiproxy and still couldnt officially uninstall it. So I used Symantec's CleanSweep and deleted everything that said multiproxy... did regedit and cleared all registries saying multiproxy... I've rebooted and its still like 'covering' my real IP.... Its funny because I goto these websites to show my IP, and it says my real IP... but when I run my ftp server it says to connect users must connect to 127.0.0.1 ... but they cant because thats mine... and its whats confusing IRC and WinMX too. This setting with 127.0.0.1 has to be somewhere hidden on my computer and keeps blocking out people from connecting to my real IP!! Please... I will owe you eternally if you could help me!! PS. I'm using Windows ME, with Cable Modem on a Network.
Jon
127.0.0.1 is an internal, emulated 'loopback interfaced', used in situations when network communication needs to be emulated, testing etc. Every machine has a loopback interface of 127.0.0.1 by default. 127.0.0.1 is 100% internal, no external communication can reach it, no user can connect to it, its not routable. I'm not overly sure what multiproxy is doing, post an ipconfig /all.
Pergo
Yeah... I know no one can connect to it.. but how do I get rid of it, and go back to being able to have ppl connect to my real IP

Jon
open a command prompt (start>run>cmd) and type them, then mark + paste the results. c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts <- paste the contents of that file as well.
Pergo
oh, I see... start>run but those windows dont stay open log enough for me to see anything they popup and close
+BudMan MVC Posted July 20, 2003 MVC Share Posted July 20, 2003 from a command prompt, start run cmd or command (if 9x os) This will give you shiny cmd prompt box, from their you can type these commands. Your host file would be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc not going to call you stupid for not knowing how to start a cmd prompt, but you do not know how to search for a file??? +BudMan MVC Posted July 20, 2003 MVC Share Posted July 20, 2003 Dude, YOU NEED 127.0.0.1 you really do. I see your behind a nat router (your ip address is 192.168.1.101), so for people to connect to you from outside, your router needs to forward ftp from outside to your internal address 192.168.1.101 and your ftp software needs to be listening on that address. Check in your ftp software for what IP address(es) it is listening on - and NO you can not set it to listen on your public address.

+BudMan MVC Posted July 21, 2003 MVC Share Posted July 21, 2003 there is definetly a problem--its not just my ftp software and i have zonealarm and i now when i run these programs zonealarm says they're looking for a connection from 127.0.0.1so can someone please help? Cuz there listening on that address - Dude everyone running tcp/ip has a 127.0.0.1 address - if this multiproxy software you ran, changed your programs from listening on your 192.168 address - change them back! Please post the screen shot of where your ftp software says what ip address it is listening on, and do a netstat -an vs just a - this will give you the numbers all your services are listening on.
