Massiveterra
For people that never played Mass Effect 1 and want to play Mass Effect 2, I usually tell them to skip the first one, even if the first one was one of my favorite games when it was released. Mass Effect 2 by far outshines the first Mass Effect by leaps and bounds

ienhz
YES! Never got a chance to play ME2 because my 360 red ringed out of warranty. Sad I won't be able to import my save from ME1 but, hey, at least I'll be able to play it now!

Mass Effect 2 by far outshines the first Mass Effect by leaps and bounds Yeah but it's the start of a story. You don't start MGS on MGS4 or Halo on Halo 3. How many books do you pick up and skip the first chapters, or start a movie half way?
shakey
Yeah but it's the start of a story. You don't start MGS on MGS4 or Halo on Halo 3. How many books do you pick up and skip the first chapters, or start a movie half way? exactly why I have not played or purchased MGS4. I have yet to play 3 all the way through, and it just wouldn't be right to skip ahead.

Massiveterra
But Mass Effect 2 does a great job filling the player in on the story even if they haven't played the first Mass Effect. There is of course a large over arching story between mass effect 1 and mass effect 2, but the main plots between those two are pretty self contained. And it's not like starting a movie in the middle. Mass Effect 1 and 2 are not constructed like Fellowship of the Rings and Two Towers. It's more constructed like Terminator 1 and 2 or Alien and Aliens. There's an overarching story but the main plots are self contained.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted August 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted August 17, 2010 For big action titles it really doesn't make a difference, but story driven games deserve to be played from the beginning. MGS games are self contained, but the amount of references and history in that series pretty much requires you to play it from the start. Otherwise you're gonna be confused in no time with questions like "wait, who's that guy?!".
Hedon
EA has no plans to bring Mass Effect 1 to PS3 http://www.examiner.com/video-game-in-national/ea-has-no-plans-to-bring-mass-effect-1-to-ps3-4 Well that could always change, but we know that confirms it won't happen anytime soon. So ME2 it is.

soniqstylz
Yeah but it's the start of a story. You don't start MGS on MGS4 or Halo on Halo 3. How many books do you pick up and skip the first chapters, or start a movie half way? this. Although I did play MGS4 first, the exposition made it easier to follow from the standpoint of someone who didn't know the story. But I totally agree, it's going to suck missing out on the first part of a story-driven narrative (although I could just play my steam copy and quit being lazy). Also, another question is how many decisions from ME1 will carry over to ME3 and affect that narrative? http://www.examiner.com/video-game-in-national/ea-has-no-plans-to-bring-mass-effect-1-to-ps3-4 Well that could always change, but we know that confirms it won't happen anytime soon. So ME2 it is. I think it confirms EA banking on people double-dipping and getting the "planned" ME trilogy.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted August 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted August 17, 2010 this. But I totally agree, it's going to suck missing out on the first part of a story-driven narrative (although I could just play my steam copy and quit being lazy). Also, another question is how many decisions from ME1 will carry over to ME3 and affect that narrative? Well there is a pyramid effect that ME1 decisions change your character in ME2, and the same will happen in ME3. They've said that the decisions will make an even bigger impact from 2 to 3 though. Hedon
Well, MS confirmed no ME1 for PS3: "And the original Mass Effect is absolutely an Xbox 360 exclusive, making Xbox 360 the only place to get the full Mass Effect experience," the company added. Corris Veteran Posted August 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted August 17, 2010 Groovy, will be nice to see what this supposed bonus content is. If MS does own the rights to the console version of ME1, I'm surprised they didn't pull a "sigma" with the first game, but then the mechanics of the second are far better than the first and they might have wanted to change that which would have taken far longer to develop. Though I did guess whatever it was they would be announcing would be arriving in Jan 2011, hopefully they will find a good way of conveying the first games story and the main choices taken before you start ME2's story.
