thor777_au
Hi all, Small amount of mussing going on in my head, so I thought id share, be kind... I was thinking about internet advertising, and I am one of those people who hate pop up ads, pop under etc and the real big glossy java ads. However what I do think we need to concede to ourselves, that in order for the internet to function at some level, we need advertisements on our websites (ie banner ads only), in order for companies to be able to make money off the internet, thus keeping their services available to us, ie yahoo. What do you guys think? in the process of blocking said ads (banner ads with a ad blocker), are we forcing companies to become more militant in there ad marketing, ie pop up ads that move across the screen. I think we have the right to block ads that create their own window and behave on there own, but do we really have the right to black banner ads that do none of these things, this forcing companies to use more and more evasive campaigns. (hey id love to see a ad free internet, but what im saying is that we need companies to be able to make money off the internet in order to keep them here) Cheers for listening, be kind... eevoo
for me pop-up and banner adds are like commercials on tv, they are there but you don't have to watch them. if you don't want to see a commercial change the channel. there for if you don't want to see pop-up and banners block them. they people that block them are not going to be influenced in anyway to buy/view/sell what ever it is that the company is wanting them to. so the company is not loseing anything by people blocking their adds. imo. zhangm Supervisor Posted July 21, 2003 Supervisor Share Posted July 21, 2003 By generally accepted moral codes that rule society, you don't have a "right" to force advertising on anyone. Believe me, if it ever comes to the point where people knock down your door and paint you walls with crap showing off their products, you will want to shoot them. "You have free will, the right to do whatever you want - until you begin to interfere with the lives of other people against their will." Advertising is getting more and more insidious, and people are not gonna just stand by and let it take over their lives. You think for one moment, that just because people quit blocking popups, that everything will get better? Well, you're rather naive. Advertising companies will never be satisfied with their statistics. 1/100th of their users can be clicking on their banners, and they will continue to research new, more invasive ways to advertise their products. It makes money for them. That's all they care about. You think they care about conveniencing you? You think they want to make your life better, by subscribing you to two dozen different online magazines about fabric and breakfast cereal? I'm interested in conveniencing myself. I don't need magazines on fabric and cereal to make me happy. I don't need 6 different types of online databases, I don't need to buy flowers for my nonexistent girlfriend. I'm an ad blocking user, and will continue to block them.
Guest Beh
yeah me myself block popups with mozilla but as far as banners I dont really care, I dont really care about commercial breaks on tv because you can change the channel but as long as they dont have ads in the middle of the show or movie in the corner of the screen or something, that would be annoying and they are kinda starting to do that
Drainbamage
Internet ads just go to the "Stuff to ignore section of my brain" i dont click on em, or pay attention to em. They dont work like tv ads. The only ones i pay attention to are the ones that pop up and consume my whole screen at which point i go "arrrggghhhhhhhh"

But at the moment you visit our house and what we paint on our walls is our business  It's like the ads along side the road. I drive past them in my car and don't like them but hey it may be my car but it's not my road :).
