[uk] PHP Qualifications?

Question

Are there any courses i can do from home to gain a legit PHP qualification?

I've pretty much learned it all myself, i have a web development qualification but it never really covered server side languages. I would love a PHP qualification to support what i already have to go on CV but don't have time to attend a college course as i dont have the time.

I don't think personal experience would stand very well if i was to ever apply to work for a web dev firm?

Ouch at ?1,000.00, but maybe it's not a bad investment. Are these things guarenteed? (X amount of re-tests if you fail etc).. that's a scary amount of money to spend if you only have 1 shot.

Has anyone from here done it?

It's ?165. If you already know PHP5, then you don't need the online classroom training.

You'd be surprised. In my experience, relevant experience has had more of an impact at interviews than formal qualifications.

Experience will always trump a formal qualification in web development. I was always asked for examples of work, but never did anyone mention my CS degree. I would say just make sure you have a solid portfolio of your work and you're set.

Only if you have said experience. ;)

If you don't have it, get it.

Considering how competitive the industry is at the moment, if you apply for the job, chances are there's going to be other people applying for the same vacancy who do have experience. If I were an employer, I'd pick the people with experience + no qualifications over people with qualifications + no experience. Experience shows you know your stuff AND you can do it. Qualifications just show you're book smart.

Experience is much better than qualifications nowadays, especially in this area of work. If you can go to an interview and prove you can do the job with relevant experience then you have a much better chance than someone who has a bit of paper that says they can do it. However once you're in your job it is sometimes nice to work in your spare time to get a qualification, also your work will usually pay for it too.
