Fallout 3 > Mass Effect

Recommended Posts

I've been playing catch up on some PC games I haven't got around to playing as I spend most of time on the PS3. I just recently finished Fallout 3 and all of the downloadable content for it. Now I've started playing Mass Effect and I must say it's quite boring in comparison to Fallout. With Fallout I couldn't stop playing until it was complete and with Mass Effect I can't wait until it's over. Teammates tend to stand around and wait to die, voice acting isn't that great (can't stand hearing Seth Green's voice), driving the Mako is terrible and the galaxy seems too big for it's own good. Even the Normandy seems like the size of a small country. Anyone else feel the same way?

I've not played the Mass Effect titles (no gaming PC and no 360), but I agree wholeheartedly with the views on Fallout 3. Yesterday was the first day in a long time that I put a game other than Fallout 3 in to my Playstation. There's so much to do and I really feel part of the World. I'm still nowhere near finished, and I still love spending long periods of time just wandering through the Wasteland finding new areas and doing the quests there. Plus all the extra content on top, I think there's a greater chance of hell freezing over than there is of me finishing the game 100%

When Mass Effect 2 comes to the PS3 in January I'll consider getting it, but Fallout 3 has certainly raised the bar as far as my expectations for RPG gaming goes.

Not really, Fallout 3 is an awesome game no doubt (can't wait for New Vegas) but Mass Effect is [1 and 2] equally awesome. However, I have noticed Mass Effect tends to be more of a love/hate game though.

Only two things I really disliked about Mass Effect 1:

You're an elite soldier who can't shoot worth crap

The Mako

Only thing I didn't like about Mass Effect 2:

...wait, was there something? I don't remember anything.

Oh yeah, that I'd finished ME1 on the 360 so couldn't import my saves :(

As for Fallout 3, loved the game but couldn't stand the music

The music is part of the who Fallout experience :D but you are right there were not enough tracks and it got VERY repetitive

At least you could take a break and switch to another radio station ocassionally

Having saif that I love Fallout 3, looking at Mass Effect as I have done in the past doesn't even appeal to me to play it.

I'd rather replay ME2 and Dragon Age than Fallout 3 personally.

But hell, it's not like there aren't a billion other games to play too. I just got Elemental and have been tooling around in it.

It's the opposite for me. I couldn't get into Fallout 3 but I absolutely loved Mass Effect 2.

I really like Mass Effect 1/2 and Fallout 3.

I've finished the Mass Effect games and have no will to play them ever again. I tried ME1 just before ME2 came out and was bored in less than half an hour.

Fallout 3 on the other hand, I can go back into at any time and I always enjoy it.

For me, the difference is ME 1/2 are both excellent games, where as Fallout 3 is a excellent world. I played it for over 50 hours before even touching the main quest line (which is easily the weakest part of Fallout 3).

I don't think the two series' have much in common other than having guns and conversations. I like them both fondly.

I love both, but find generally that Mass Effect (and 2) are superior to Fallout 3 in many ways, they are comparably different, but Mass Effect as a whole is a much better and shinier package.

F3 is a good sandbox game.

but ME and ME2, they have much better story and storytelling, it flows much better, and the quality of the characters and animation makes you a lot more immersed in the story as well.

While there are big areas you "CAN" walk around in in ME, F3 has the whole world you have to walk around mindlessly to get where you think you need to go, and to grind some XP for the next encounter and to grind for cash and ammo. ME.. it just flows with the story. the game is there for the story, not the other way around, Where you have to hunt for the story, and then get it spoonfed in various ways. instead of the game being the story. and everything you do being part of the story.

I actually missed the Mako in ME2. Not really the Mako from ME1, but a new and improved Mako experience. I'm not sure the planet scan was an improvement on that...

I'm a pretty big fan of the Mass Effect games. I think the story, characters, and combat are top-notch. And, I have to disagree with the opinion of the OP about the voice acting. Mass Effect 1 and 2 have some of the best voice acting in the whole industry. If you consider the voice acting in Mass Effect to be bad, which game do you think have good voice acting?

As for Fallout 3, I thought the combat was boring and not very satisfying at all. I still remember the first time I used a gun in that game. I put the reticle right on my target, fired 3 or 4 times and I hit nothing. So not only did that kill the "real-time" shooter combat for me, but the VATS system has no challenge in it what so ever. So it just got really boring, really fast. I don't think I spent more than an hour playing the game.

Isn't that the point of RPG's that use a "dice roll" when it comes to combat?

Fallout bored me to death as soon as I got out of the vault.

haha me too! i could only get a couple hours of play outside the vault before i uninstalled it. unbelievable.

ME and ME2, i couldnt put down. easily two of my favorite games ever.

Yes, the world's are huge - but i love that. The Mako was annoying at times, but i kinda liked it. it was only annoying to me when i'd get stuck in some rocky area.

I thought ME1 was alright. But I did enjoy ME2. They've improved plenty in the sequel.

However, I do agree that Fallout 3 is WAYY better than the Mass Effect series. F3 is undoubtedly one of my favorite game of all time. It was extremely addicting and every part of the story (especially the expansions) were more than satisfying.

But seeing as though some repliers have complete opposite responses to mine, I think this is all personal opinion. Neither game is better than the other. It simply depends on who is reviewing.

A very good point. Some games work better for some than others.

I stopped playin Falloot shortly after leaving the vault and never played since. Mass Effect I finished twice so it's 2:0 for ME as far as I'm concerned ;)

Just depends what setting you prefer.. I love sci fi, but I love the whole vibe of being abandoned in a post apocalyptic world even more :)

See, that's what makes me sad that I didn't like Fallout 3. I too love post-apocalyptic stories, and so I thought Fallout 3 was going to be one of my most favorite games. But, I ended up not liking the mechanics of it. Maybe one day when I hit a game lull, I'll go back and try it again...

Fallout 3 is one of my all-time favorite games.... when it works.

The random crashes are a game-breaker. I find myself walking in and out of almost every building for the autosave. :(
