vBulletin 4

Question

I will be "rebooting" a large community which is currently using vBulletin 3.8.4. A complete restart, new database, host, everything. Currently I am debating on using vB 4. Money isn't an issue, and I've found a skin that is compatible that I really like - in fact, it is not available for vB 3.x.x. However, previously, around 6 months ago, when I mentioned updating I was told it was not a good idea and it is filled with bugs. I have played around with it now for ~24 hours on a local XAMPP install, but I would like to hear opinions from others on whether or not they feel it is a good idea to use vB 4, a realitvley new product.

What do you think about vB 4?

We have recently upgraded from vBulletin 3.8.4 to 4.0.5 (Now 4.0.6), this has been a massive task that took us several days to complete.

The initial upgrade went fine, we disabled all our plugins and upgraded to 4.0.5 ok, its after that we had problems.

We then upgraded VBSEO to the VB4 version which broke all the attachments on our forum, luckily the VBSEO support team knew it was a bug in the current version of VBSEO and were able to help us fix the problem.

VB4 is basically like starting again, nothing much from VB3 will work in VB4. All we could keep from VB3 was the users, forum sections and posts... your VB3 theme and any customization's you made will not work in VB4. You will also need to get VB4 versions of any plugins you have installed.

The new StyleVar editor for themes is useless in my opinion, i found it so much easier to customize themes in version 3... I thought it was a lot harder than it needed to be in VB4, although i'm no expert web designer, maybe its easier if you are?

The horrible and time consuming upgrade aside I think VB4 is a great improvement over VB3 once you get it working how you want it to, everything looks a lot more sleek and modern. The integration with Facebook is really nice too. It also supports ad-sense out the box which has done wonders for our ad revenue. For VB3 i modified a few templates to display adverts to guests and users with less than 30 posts, this earned us around $3 a day ad revenue.

However since upgrading to VB4 and using the built in ad manager system we are earning at least $20 a day from adverts (adverts are only shown to guests still).

If your prepared to put the time in then the upgrade is well worth it, VB4 could be better, however overall I would say its a nice improvement over VB3.

Thanks for the rundown. Based on what you've said, there shouldn't be a problem with my board seeing as we are starting completely from scratch. I have briefly looked, and it appears most, if not all, of the modifications I plan to use are available in a vB 4 version.
