Darti
ok i am going to be moving to a new house for a university placement for almost a year, and the area has adsl, so i want to get it since i cant stand modem anymore, the problem is that although i am getting payed for the placement i am not getting much and i am a student, so the cheaper i can get it the better but i want a service that is worth the money, not some super cheap service that blocks all ports and has a limit. the following are what i need -- adsl 500 -- wires only, i have a modem already. -- no ports blocked -- no limits on download caps or if there is a very high one. -- 50:1 -- 1 month contract -- static ip would be nice so far i have come up with the following deals: virgin broadband no activation fee ?24.99/month inc vat 1 month contract 5.99 GB month limit ???? - anyone know anything about this ? plusnet> adsl home self install activation ?70.50 inc vat monthly ?21.99 inc vat 1 month contracGriffin internet/b> activation 58.75 inc vat monthly 23.49 inc vat 1 month contracEclipse internet/b> activation 58.75 inc vat monthly 23.95 inc vat 1 month contract from the above i am going towards virgin at the moment, due to NO activation fee and good service. I have checked on websites such as www.adslguide.org.uk and www.ispreview.co.uk, for other services, but havent really found anything that seems to match what i need. If anyone can provide feedback on any of the above, specially virgin, or if you can recommend any other UK isp which matches the above spec, then can you let me know. aldo
pipex is nice. i've been with them for a year and a bit now, and there service is top notch. you get good email, good newsservers (for binaries - better than some premium providers) and a superb connection rate. also you can get through to support within a couple of rings normally if there isnt a big outage :)
RadishTM Veteran Posted July 22, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 22, 2003 Check out Bulldog Communications :) .... Radish?
Darti
all bulldog products are for 12 months, and i wont be in the house for 12 months so i will be paying for extra months when i have left :( pipex looks good, i am going to consider them now, the only thing is that they have a no activation fee for solo xtreme package, but then it says at the bottom If you cancel the service within the first twelve months after activation, you will be charged a ?58.75 cancellation fee. so i would have to pay the fee anyway:(( so it would be 58.75 then 23.44 a month. which makes it the same as griffin and eclipse. Dessimat0r
Don't go with Virgin, **** any ISP that imposes a monthly limit - you are only encouraging them...
Darti
i sent a email to virgin regarding the limit, and they say they have no limit on any packages. it was a missprint on the site relating to customer service charges of ?5.99 per month, if you require high level services, the GB was a mistake, and they have taking it down. so virgin is still a valid contender. as regards to nildram, although i would like to go with them, the price is too high and they dont have monthly contracts only the 12 month. mutantcol
well, just saying that force9 and plusnet are the same company: Being a force9 user i can say that they have an excellent service, they impose no limits on how much you can download, and they allow you to use a router etc and provide shared broadband accross your network without having to subscribe to business broadband. I'd also like to add that they have a batch download system where for example, there is a very large and slow download, they download it for you (eg... downloading linux ISOs) and mail you when its down, so you can download it off their servers at full speed. They also have a ticket help system (similar to ebuyers eNotes) where you open a ticket, and usually you'll get a reply within hours, if not the same day. static IP as standard www.plusnet.co.uk www.force9.co.uk notice how the websites are very similar? mutantcol
well when i first got force9 i went for the ?22.99 deal, but then you could choose to include activation with this price and pay it off over the year. it worked out at ?28.60 or something per month, now down to ?22.99 (see below) they also offer a .co.uk website address for ?1 per month, which i also pay for. Pretty good.

They allow you to use a router, without have to get business broadband, as mentioned above! Have a look at: http://www.plus.net/info2/residential/res_..._broadband.html free activation at present time! and more.....
