StOnD
Sorry, I'll only pay for music that is DRM-free. Preferably in MP3 format, or some similar format that is easy to transfer to a digital music player or burn to CD. Dazzla Veteran Posted July 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 27, 2003 1. You are only allowed to download the songs once. OK, no biggie, just make sure they're backed up.2. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BACK UP THE LICENSES!!!!! What the hell? Why not? OK, so I figure I'm not allowed to back up the licenses, because they're afraid I might transfer them and the songs that belong to them, to another person's computer. Anyway, anyone who was looking at the radar last night would have seen massive thunderstorms in Falls Church, VA where I live. During the storm, the cheap Wal-Mart surge protector protecting my computer gets fried, along with my hard drive. Well, the hard drive seems fine physically, but it wouldn't boot up. File corruption, I assume. So, last night I reinstalled XP, all the patches, and Windows Media Player 9. I am curious about how I will be able to play my music that I bought now, so I open up one of the DRM protected files that I bought. I get a message saying that I have no more licenses left to download, and to please contact customer service for further assistance, which I did. Below is my e-mail to them, and their e-mail back to me: I recently purchased some music from your web site, orders 16558699 & 16563103. Tonight, I had to reinstall my operating system to recover from a power surge. I backed up my music to another location, and after I re-installed the OS, I couldn't play my music anymore! Windows Media Player launched a small window of your web site for me to enter my e-mail address & password into, then after thanking me for my patience, I was informed that I had no more licenses left to download, and to contact customer service. How can I play my music again? I noticed that when I tried to back up my licenses (before I reinstalled), I was not allowed to do so. Why not? It's not fair that I should lose the right to play it just because I re-installed my OS. I'm sure this happens to many of your customers and the answer to my problem is an easy one. Thanks for your help. And their reply: Thank you for writing to us. We are responding regarding your order #16563103. We apologize for any confusion. Due to license restrictions, we are unable to allow for extra downloads in the event of a system upgrade or computer crash. We are also unable to assist if songs have been mistakenly deleted or files become corrupted. In addition, the encryption technology that we use is not intended to be compatible with system backup software. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. Have fun staying with your current Windows OS for the rest of your life!

Dross
Hmm. Why pay for a mp3 or a wmv unless they are at the highest quality? If they are charging money, then they should pay for bandwidth. I would not pay $1 for a 128 kbs MP3! No way! I would not pay for mp3s! I'll go buy the cd, then rip to MP3 and have a copy on my computer and in my car and in my room, which is perfectly legal as long as I don't share it with other people (well it's probably not, but it should be). Why waste time with this online crap?

hyperb0le
In a word, no. Not only is the DRM terrible, and pricing misleading, but i would never support a company that blatently rips off commercials from a company with such small market share. Rathamon
I think the idea of paying a small fee $.80ish for a song is fine , IF that then allows me to download the entire track at full CD quality to then re-encode IN A FORMAT AND QUALITY OF MY CHOOSING and I am then free to use this track in ANY media playing software I should choose under ANY operating system and ANY hardware that I choose. I also NEED to be allowed to make a backup of this file and copy the music to my minidisk player to listen to on the move, or burn to a CD to listen to in my car. A few times I have considered purchasing tracks electronically however as soon as I smell a whiff of DRM they have lost my business
me101 Veteran Posted July 28, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 28, 2003 The buymusic.com service appears to just suck... plain and simple... Apart from the restrictions in relation to the DRM (not being able to backup your songs, as posted here... and not being able to send to a portable device unless it's got SDMI ) etc..., their service from what I can gather is a waste of time. Have you tried to find a track for 79cents yet... they are very few, most are 99c and some are even $1.14... Plus the silly variations on the limitations regarding the drm-locked files... a few examples.. Thompson Twins - Doctor! Doctor! (99c) = Computers - 3, Transfers - unlimited, Burns - 10 Blondie - Heart Of Glass (79c) = Computers - 1, Transfers - 5, Burns - 10 The Vapors - Turning Japanese (79c) = Computers - 1, Transfers - 5, Burns - 10 Michael Jackson - Billie Jean ($1.14) = Computers - 3, Transfers - 5, Burns - 5 Shania Twain - Forever And For Always (99c) = Computers - 1, Transfers - unlimited, Burns - unlimited Coldplay - Everything's Not Lost ($1.99) = Computers - 1, Transfers - 3, Burns - 3 (In the case of the coldplay track I have highlighted, you cannot buy the whole album as one bundle (like many others) you have to buy the individual tracks from the "Parachutes" album, which mounts to $10.90 for 10 tracks!) Their pricing and limitations are all over the place, some have unlimited burns, other have only 1 PC to which you can have the track! So if I'm over a friends house, and I see that a new track has been released, that I may want to purchase, i'm up the creek without a paddle as most tracks are only "Computer - 1", so I'd have to wait until I get home to go onto my PC and download the song... Doh! At least iTMS lets you backup or move your songs to a few PC's, it's just a matter of re-registering your email account with iTMS on a new or alternate Mac. Plus... their attempt to advertise (saw an ad on the telly the other day, yuk!) is just a plain copy of the Mac iPod ad's, do they not have an original idea of their own ? I think i'll wait until ITunes for Windows comes out later this year and possibly get an iPod as this is by far appears to be the best portable player on the market (Music Match software that supports Windows and the iPod just plain is a waste of time!). My only real concern is whether the iTunes for Windows and PC iTMS will be compitable with the many PC portable media players... Obviously ones that only support AAC will be able to work with the iTunes service, and that currently is a very short list of 1, the Apple iPod (I could be wrong on this topic though...)
