PS3 Firmware 3.42 mandatory update available now

Another month, yet another PS3 firmware update. Little over one month since 3.41 (and two months since 3.40) comes yet another mandatory update for your PS3. Firmware 3.42 seemingly doesn't add any functionality to your system beyond the usual "system software stability," but it is required if you want to continue accessing the PlayStation Network or the PlayStation Store.

While unverified, this update may be a response to a recently-released jailbreak tool, which supposedly enables piracy on Sony's once-bulletproof system. We'll update this story if Sony provides any additional details on what this firmware does exactly.

Then you cant play games or sign into the psn as it wont let you :)

Then I won't and I'll stick to my XBOX 360 :) I don't want to be forced into a download that requires 160+mb of space.

Shouldn't have bought one in the first place then tbh, it doesn't require a full 160mb download since a new update method was implimented in the last firmware update, it only downloads what it needs.

Updated, and yes, if you update through the console menu, it only downloads what it needs - didn't take long on my 1.5Mbit connection :p

Actually you can, if you follow the new bypass :)

Actually you cant http://www.bbc.co.uk...nology-11213618 Mathieu Hervais, one of the developers behind PSGroove, told BBC News that it was "safer not to update" if users wished to continue using the hacks.

the guy who wrote the hack has said so :) face it sony will continue to block it and eventually will ban peoples consoles and psn id's.

Bypass will be blocked, it's just a proxy.

Same thing happened with 3.15.

Unless there's a new exploit say bye to online.

Ahaha, this is going to turn into 'BAAWWW I DON'T WANT TO BE FORCED INTO AN UPDATE' and all kinds of privacy/evil empire/the man stuff, which is just noise to hide the SOUNDS OF PIRACY going on.

Exactly. Just like the last time where the 5 legit Other OS users where drowned out by the 402348821738912378912631982361928631239812 "I WANTZ MY FREE GAMEZZ LOL" crowd.

LOL I like how people assume I pirate PS3 games or have hacked my PS3 due to refusing to update. I do neither of those I'm just fed up of always updating my PS3 straight away. I don't need to use my PS3 right now so why should I update because sony tell me to?

You people make me sick, I really lose patience with people who appoint themselves as Internet pirate police and point fingers of self righteousness at other people. Jailbreaking and softmods for consoles are to achieve more than just piracy, they open up hardware that the USER paid for, to allow them to run their own software on it. There are plenty of uses for jailbreaking besides piracy, and you people need to stop whinging about Piracy, and get your heads around the fact that having closed off and restricted systems is bad for consumers.
