PS3 Firmware 3.42 mandatory update available now

Recommended Posts

You people make me sick, I really lose patience with people who appoint themselves as Internet pirate police and point fingers of self righteousness at other people. Jailbreaking and softmods for consoles are to achieve more than just piracy, they open up hardware that the USER paid for, to allow them to run their own software on it. There are plenty of uses for jailbreaking besides piracy, and you people need to stop whinging about Piracy, and get your heads around the fact that having closed off and restricted systems is bad for consumers.

Be honest - how many of those who have jailbroken their PS3 are going to program their own software for it now? As far as I know programming software for the PS3 is rather tricky thanks to the Cell architecture.

You and I both know that > 95% of the jailbreakers want to run pirated software.

I do have to say, it REALLY ****es me off when I randomly decide I wanna play a game (I use my PS3 very little) and it wants an update for this, an update for that...

Buy a ps2, this is the future of consoles, online and updating to improve the system, IMAGINE THAT.

People made that same argument with the old Xbox, and a huge homebrew scene ended up appearing.

My point was, people like MS Pandya always jump to the assumption of piracy and make it their duty to appoint themselves as the Internet's moral guardians, when in fact what people choose to do with their own hardware is none of their business.

I guess I'm in the other 5% then, I just want PS2 backwards compatibility and mod the hell out of my XMB^^

And be honest too, I bet 99% of the human population have already done something illegal willingly in their life, be it underage drinking or what not.

I'm not saying piracy is right but people should atleast stop pointing fingers on each other and stop being all: "HAHAHAHAHA SONY BLOCKED YOUR HAXX" to others.

Each person has the freedom to do everything, they just have to accept the consequences their actions call.

Oh shutup and stop your whining. There are far more important things to worry about in the world instead of whether updating your PS3 that will take all of 2 mins including the download of it is unreasonable. Utter pathetic baby.

Get some perspective! I'm quite sure there are bigger issues in the world. But one benefit of a console over PC gaming has always been the "turn on and play" nature. That no longer holds true.

Also, while I'm here - I play my PS3 so infrequently because I'm usually out in the real world doing more important stuff.

I don't even own a PS3, so I guess you where wrong on that one. Oops! I just advocate user freedom, and am sick of people going "OMGZ PIRATES ARE TEH HITLERZ" every time a thread like this appears.

Then why do you care ? this doesn't effect you since you don't own a ps3. the ps3 was never advertised as an open system its closed just like the wii and the 360 EVERYONE who bought these systems along with everything else thats been jailbroken knew they where limited yet they chose to break the TOS anyway, so what is your point you are trying to make?

Legal Homebrew community? Non-illegal use of the PS3 when wanting to jailbreak it? Give me a break. We all know that the vast majority of those wanting to use this jailbreak are doing so in hopes of pirating PS3 games. How you pirates can moan about Sony shutting down a loophole or forcing a update to prevent something that was never intented for the console when you bought it is beyond me.

Took about 2.5 minutes to update. I approve. And I fully agree with the person who posted prior to me; people who don't update are clearly looking to pirate. Don't give me that bull**** line "I just want to back up my games". No, you want to pirate games and be a cheap ******. Get a job and buy them like the rest of us!

Wow, so a user comes in this thread and basically says "he doesn't like it so he won't use it" and you blast him for it, then your advice is "don't like it don't use it?" Sounds about right for the Sony shills around here.

I regard this the same as the iPhone. If you actually care about the freedom to run whatever software you wish on these devices then you shouldn't buy one in the first place. If I actually did want to, I'd have just bought a small media PC and plugged that into my television instead.

I happily paid for my PS3 knowing it is locked down because I have no intention of running my own software on it anyway. If you've got a problem with that, then please consider that you shouldn't be telling me what to think.

I've not seen one complaint about Sony closing the loophole, everyone knew that Sony would do that. People are complaining about the same thing they always complain about, the time it takes to update.

As for knowing what people were buying, can you say that the owners of the 'fat' PS3's bought it knowing that Sony would remove the Other OS function? Being honest no-one know's quite what lengths Sony will go to in preventing piracy on the machine. They have made it clear though that they will close of any methods they find and do it quickly.

Well to go against the norm, I do NOT play online and I rarely purchase from the PSN however, I am going to download and install it anyway. Because Sony felt it important enough to put out an update.

it takes less than 5 mins to update, whats to moan about? you do know they changed they way the updates are done in the last firmware yeah? only downloads what it needs and not the whole firmware. :)

Edit: I bought a fat ps3 in 2006 and didn't give two hoots about the Other OS feature being removed and i don't think majority of the ps3 users did either in fact i bet you any money majority of the users where confused at what the other OS feature did because lets face it majority of people don't even know what linux is outside the tech communities:)

I notice you changed your post after reading people had complained about waiting for updates. I do indeed know about how the firmwares work. I've never once complained about the time it takes to update either, I couldn't care less about it, I go do something else while it downloads.

Regarding the OtherOS the fact that you didn't give hoots still doesn't really make it right does it? Like a cable company saying to you, well you never watch these channels that you paid for, we will just take them off you. Whether or not you use it, others certainly did and there was a whole community that did so. Yes they are in the minority but it doesn't stop them being annoyed with the removal of a function they paid for when buying the machine.

At least it's not like it was years ago where it would take ages to download and then wait for user input before starting to update!

Oh, I've been around for a while and know how it works. In fact, your focusing on my use of a specific word instead of the bigger picture of your inconsistencies is proof positive of where I am. But, please, carry on with your propaganda.

Ahaha, this is going to turn into 'BAAWWW I DON'T WANT TO BE FORCED INTO AN UPDATE' and all kinds of privacy/evil empire/the man stuff, which is just noise to hide the SOUNDS OF PIRACY going on.

If I could I'd give you a +1 reputation for that.

Amen. :D

Me? You quoted me...

I know it's not a LONG time, but it just bugs me. Sure fine, don't let me buy from the store or whatever, I can follow that logic. But I have not modded my PS3, I just wanna pop a disk in and play...
