Sony launches pro-button, anti-Kinect campaign with yaybuttons.com

Remember when motion-controlled games were simply for old people and children? (We kid!) However, Nintendo's marketing has rarely reached this level of aggression. Sony has launched a new website -- www.yaybuttons.com -- that plays hardball against Microsoft's button-free Kinect experience. By clicking any of the buttons on the virtual PlayStation Move controller, you'll be able to read through a rant from fictional PlayStation VP Kevin Butler:

"It turns out that buttons are pretty important. Not like "save the whales" important. More like 'not play games that suck' important. Cuz they help you ... control stuff. Controller. Control. Kinda makes sense. Some people don't think you need buttons. WHAT?! Craziness. Could you imagine gaming without buttons? Where would the control come from?"

While there's some reason for concern, this kind of marketing can be interpreted not as playful, but a return to the "arrogant" attitude Sony has been notorious for. Considering Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda confirmed future games could use the button-y Xbox 360 controller in conjunction with Kinect, this might be an argument Sony won't want to kick up.

lol :D Another Sony miss. They're only going to call attention to the fact that you can use button on the Kinect (unless they blatantly lie, which they've done in the past)

Desperate / quick response marketing..

I think you hit the nail on the head. I have a suspicion that Sony realizes they are coming off as a Wii rip-off while the Kinect, even with all its "flaws," seems like the next step forward.

Boy, I hate Sony! I saw an ad today for Move... Hated it. This company may be good at phones and TV's. But the games consoles are horrible. I hated the ad, and all their sarcastic advertising campaigns getting people to go to them. They are like the Apple of games consoles... I mean ripping off the Wii Still... I have a wii and have no intention of getting a PS3. My wii is in warranty for a few more years yet so no PS3. My Wii has not even broke once. I'll be buying an Xbox 360 Slim and Kinect (Which is way better than Move) soon. Sony are just the worst.

No, this is actually VERY powerful marketing right there. Because all of what they said is true. Gaming without buttons isn't anywhere near possible yet, unless you want to play "games that suck" as they said. And to see if that's true, just look at the Kinect titles coming out. They do, suck. They're mini-games!

Wow, you fail, hard.

1) "Boy, I hate Sony!" You're automatically dismissing a product based on your opinion of the company. So from the start, you're being irrational.

2) "But the games consoles are horrible" You realize that the PS3 is the only console that you could play ALL of the Games of the Year, 2008 and 2009? You can't play Uncharted 2 on an Xbox or a Wii, and Uncharted 2 won Game of the Year by many major game magazines. Same with Metal Gear Solid 4. Both of those were Game of the Years, and the other top winners for Game of the Year were MULTIPLATFORM games like Grand Theft Auto IV, which you can play on any console.

So how can Sony's game consoles suck if they DO have the best games, as shown by PROFESSIONALS in the game review industry? Your logic fails once again.

3) "I hated the ad, and all their sarcastic advertising" Yeah I agree with you there, Sony is being cocky.

4) "My Wii has not even broke once. I'll be buying an Xbox 360 Slim" Are you SERIOUS? So you tout the reliability of the Wii (It's very reliable), but then you say you're going to buy an Xbox? You realize that they have the greatest failure rates out of all the consoles? PS3 is at about 10% from the last number I heard, while Xbox 360 is at 25%. So, reliability isn't even a factor for you, even though you tried to play that card, but got caught in your bluff.

5) "Kinect (Which is way better than Move)" Oh really? You've used both? If you like playing little useless mini-games, enjoy your Kinect. I feel like you've never even touched a PS3 before.

By the way, I love everything about Microsoft, except their Xbox, since Sony makes a better game console. I buy the better product, no matter my bias against companies. I wouldn't buy a Sony laptop since they're overpriced, but I would buy 6 more PS3's because they ARE better. Become an educated and intelligent consumer, please.

Buttons > No buttons. Kinect won't work well IMHO

You're assuming Kinect is supposed to replace button gaming. Its not, its going right alongside it and there are going to be great games for both kinds.
