vassie
Anyone got any reccomendations? I'm fed up of running a network cable from my router (upstairs), all the way to my XBOX (downstairs)! Thanks Ben :)
BroChaos Veteran Posted July 23, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 23, 2003 i'm working on it right now actually. i've been comparing the d-link di-624 and the linksys wrt54g. i think 802.11g is best, cuz you need all the bw you can get. however, i can't seem to find a .11g bridge yet. lemme try to describe what i want to do. i have one wired pc and the dsl jack in the same room. xbox is in living room. i also have 2 wireless laptops. ___________________wired connection to pc NIC dsl -- wireless router -< ___________________ wireless connection to bridge - to xbox NIC the only concerns i have is transferring backed up games to and from xbox. the speed won't even touch that of a wired connection. however, it's plent of bw for streaming movies and music. i just need to find a .11g bridge. how is your setup gonna look? Statikk
Make your own bridge from an older pc. I had a 450MHz computer running winxp with a wireless adaptor and a NIC set up as an ethernet bridge. It just sits next to the TV and provides internet to the XBOX and any computer that i might currently be tearing apart in front of the tv. Used to also use it for mp3s, movies and emulation on the tv but the XBOX took all those features over. It's currently on its way out of that room though because transferring XBOX games via wireless takes WAY to long.
BroChaos Veteran Posted July 23, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 23, 2003 transferring games is that bad eh? i'm thinking i might just scratch the whole wireless xbox deal, just get the router, and use the wired ports for the pc and xbox, and just let the laptops use the wireles... i dunno, i guess it'll depend on how much of a mess it is to wire the xbox...it's not that far away, maybe 40ft of wire, but no wires would really be nice... BroChaos Veteran Posted July 24, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 24, 2003 ok, i think i've figured out what i'm gonna do. i'm gonna get the linksys wrt54g wireless router and the wet54g wired to wireless bridge, for the xbox. according to pricegrabber, i should be able to do this for about $265, including shipping. now my only worries is the speed for transferring larger files. no one is happy with how fast .11b is, will .11g have a noticable increase? i wonder if linksys has any rebates going on...that would help :p man, this will be so kickin if it works. just imagine having all your music and all your favorite movies at the press of a button. and no wires to get in the way. plus i'll be able to use the wireless for my laptops. vassie
Right then, i've got my hands on a Netgear MR314, what do I need to plug into my XBOX? Thanks Ben
BroChaos Veteran Posted July 24, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 24, 2003 you need a wireless bridge. basically, it will convert the cat5 adapter of your xbox to wireless. since you have a .11b router, you could get the linksys wet11b.
Endoscient
one idea is to run ethernet wires thru your walls if u can. my wireless router/cable modem is downstairs and we run wires to my ps2 in another room downsairs (it connects into a wall jack) and to two room upstairs. we have wireless bc we cant run wires to one room were a computer is bc of the walls it has. Roger H. Veteran Posted July 30, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 30, 2003 (edited) Well you have to "go advanced" The box below is the quick reply box.. so type something in there then click go advanced or just click "add reply" to the right of the box and that'll take you to the full featured reply where the attachment area is below.... this i wanna see cuz i got my box on my LAN now. any wireless bridge will work tho and you don't need more than 11Mbit/s upload for Xbox live and all that since most peoples upload are 128Kbit so 11Mbit is already tons faster. The only time you need more bandwidth is if you mod your box and you're using it to serv MP3s and Video over your network... MS coming out with a pack tho for us "normal users to have that functionality Edited July 30, 2003 by SHoTTa35
