Sony Patents BC Attachment for PS3

Recommended Posts

Sony may be readying a device that re-enables backwards compatibility for newer PlayStation 3 systems. Siliconera discovered a patent, filed by the console manufacturer in Japan, which outlines an external attachment that would allow any model of PS3 to run PlayStation 2 software.

According to the application, Sony's proposed add-on would contain its own CPU, DVD decoder/emulator, plus sound and graphics processors. The adapter appears to be designed to connect to the console via USB or some other connector.

Should this device become a reality, it'd really serve to underscore the mixed messaging Sony's had on backwards compatibility over the years. The company initially emphasized the importance of the feature leading up to the launch of the PS3, only to remove the functionality from later systems -- and now, potentially, sell it back to its customers.

Cool if true, but how much?

well MS did charge for the HDDVD drive which imo was the thing that made bluray win the war.

That was a whole new hardware....PS2 emulation is already possible using the existing PS3....not sure what they are "selling" here

BS. They give it to us, take it away, and now sell it to us. You can buy used PS2's all day long dirt cheap now... which this essentially is.

this is sony we are talking about. how would be be surprised if they pulled something like this?

Didn't the "hackers" already prove you can add software BC to all existing PS3 ? so why would they make this device instead...

well it couldn't be because Sony simply wants to rip of their customers, afterall Sony never charges unfair charges for stuff they shouldn't :p

Uggh, please don't give me any more devices to fight for my already lacking 2 USB 2.0 ports on the Slim. I don't want to clutter up my media rack with USB hubs for console add-ons. Let alone the idea that you would charge me for this.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sell this thing anywhere between $40-$60 (Well $39.99 or $59.99). I'm not going to buy this since I have the first gen ps3 still with the card reader and it's BC.

Really? I thought they got the software emulator to run on the slim?

yeah, pretty sure there was even a topic here about it.

It was a post on some hacking forum about some possible future update that will unlock Backwards compatibility that "should" let all PS3's play PS2 games, but that is all it is, a post, until they release something they are just words with no proof, so I wouldn't hold your breath till something actually materializes before people start going on about it.

Are you sure? I saw a youtube video of a slim playing a PS2 game....

Even if they did, the only games left that haven't/aren't being converted to PS3 games and I'd really want to play is MGS. And buy a whole new adapter certainly isn't worth it for those two games, I'd rather dig out my old PS2 and plug that in.

You guys have to realize that emulation is just that, emulation.

With this addon I would expect 100% compatibility with all PS2 game libraries where as emulation from the PS3 can be buggy.

To me that seems fair considering you wouldn't get any buggy play with this adapter.

Lot of proof that really is tbh, I could make a youtube video of a 360 playing a PS3 game on an old tv at an odd angle in bad lighting if you want.

I'm not saying it can't happen, I'm saying don't suddenly assume from a post that is is 100% true and is going to happen, otherwise you might just end up more disappointed.

exactly, and for all we know that's just a PSN title that's being played. I still don't believe it either.

There are more than just that one video from different peeps though. I only posted that one. There are numerous forums that have had people done the same thing. Granted, all these people could have faked it, but I doubt it.

I am not getting my hopes up, as I don't have any PS2 games laugh.gif
