Sony Patents BC Attachment for PS3

A PS2 with a male USB adapter?

as opposed to a female USB adapter?

seriously not attempting to be a smartass, just comes naturally.

is there a difference in all realistic-ness.

The price would have to be right for this to work IMO. Personally my household still has the launch 60gig, so BC isn't a problem for us. However I know eventually I will have to get my own PS3 and I do like the slim, but I want BC at the same time. I want the convience of having 1 device to play all the games not 2 devices. If you need an add-on to play PS2 games you might as well get a PS2. It just seems to me they need to find someway to get it to work again internally through software update or whatever.

I think this just goes to show what we knew all along: emulating the GS of the PS2 on the PS3 hardware proved just too difficult to do. While they found it easy to emulate the EE chip, the GS was another beast altogether. So although it is likely Sony had been hoping to get PS2 emulation fully working, this shows that they had not choice but to return to using actual PS2 hardware. Of course it can be debated whether or not having a dedicated PS2 accessory for your PS3 for the sole purpose of having the PS3 upscale the image is really worth it or not as existing slim PS2s can be had quite cheap. Probably cheaper than what Sony will charge for this accessory.

So Sony wants to make their console into Voltron? Didn't this end badly for Sega?

Lol...I pictured the same thing!!! Especially since it has its own power supply.

well MS did charge for the HDDVD drive which imo was the thing that made bluray win the war.

Wrong, they charged for the HD DVD drive because they didn't want to take the stupid risk that Sony did by forcing the BluRay player into the console, because at that point, HD-DVD and BluRay were still duking it out. Imagine the debacle of all the PS3s if HD-DVD would have won. It had nothing to do with Sony bundling the player and everything to do with the final few movie publishing companies totally screwing over Microsoft and the other HD-DVD partners at the very last minute.

Yes, because the size of your customer install base means absolutely nothing rofl.gif

Are you kidding me? Did you even read why HD-DVD was killed off? It was the movie companies that were outputting the movies, they ditched Microsoft and Toshiba in a surprise move in the very last second, and that is why HD-DVD is dead.

but afaik all PS3 game discs are blu-ray so not bundling the player with the console would be a even bigger debacle than doing so.

Ah, I forgot. This is the Sony Console forum, where all things Sony are regarded as godly and where Sony's never done anything wrong.??Enjoy your misconceptions then.

It has it's own power supply? blink.gif

Did you really expect a PS2-dongle to be USB powered? Considering USB has a maximum of 5V and 1A, and even the PS2 slim (with the integrated power supply) is 8.5V and 5.3A, expecting it to be USB powered is a tad unrealistic  It's a nice idea but simply not going to happen, period.

EDIT: One thing I should say though is that this "PS2 in a dongle" approach is that for the PS4 they can just code another PS2 emulator (if they drift away from Cell BE) and base it around this PS2 dongle, meaning everyone who purchased the dongle the first time won't have to buy it again or pay an extra premium for the PS4. This can also be applied to PS5, 6, etc. It also means that we may get a fully working PS2 emulator on the PC by some... other means ;)

Always the same reasons when people can't agree, instead of just agreeing in a difference of opinion, it has to be fanboism or a such like excuse.
