Sony Patents BC Attachment for PS3

BS. They give it to us, take it away, and now sell it to us. You can buy used PS2's all day long dirt cheap now... which this essentially is.

I thought it is only slim ps3 cannot play ps2 games.

It is unlike OtherOS feature, before you buy it, it already stated clearly for you.

Did you really expect a PS2-dongle to be USB powered? Considering USB has a maximum of 5V and 1A, and even the PS2 slim (with the integrated power supply) is 8.5V and 5.3A, expecting it to be USB powered is a tad unrealistic  It's a nice idea but simply not going to happen, period.

EDIT: One thing I should say though is that this "PS2 in a dongle" approach is that for the PS4 they can just code another PS2 emulator (if they drift away from Cell BE) and base it around this PS2 dongle, meaning everyone who purchased the dongle the first time won't have to buy it again or pay an extra premium for the PS4. This can also be applied to PS5, 6, etc. It also means that we may get a fully working PS2 emulator on the PC by some... other means ;)

Well I thought they may just be selling a software emulator on a big "USB stick".

But I guess you're right, most likely a whole PS2 crammed in there  Your edit is actually a fair point also.

If its 100% hardware BC which allows the PS3's CPUs to apply PC emulator like filters and upscaling I'd be interested (not to be confused by the current pretty poor upscaling).

This really makes no sense at this point in the game for them... I would be willing to bet money this is for the PS4...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but reading through the articles and sources they link from, it seems the patent has been filed for the PS3, or at least with the PS3 used in the demonstrations.

Considering there are no PS3s with BC any more I don't know how it doesn't make sense, how much it will sell who knows, but there's still people around here complaining about the lack of BC.

No no no, definitely I can bet it's essentially the whole PS2 in there, although obviously somethings like controller IO and the like are modified, as that would make no sense :p Don't take my word as law, but I can personally bet that the dongle itself is purely hardware and the emulator itself will be held in the PS3 firmware, or as a free download on the Playstation Network (more modular, more likely, less PS3 FW overhead). Upscaling is definitely going to happen, but I don't think we're going to see any major filters happen, at least not at launch. The most you'll likely get is similar emulation features found when you play PS1 games on the PS2. Of course, the Cell BE could quite easily do stuff like resolution upscaling, additional AA, Super Eagle texture scaling, etc especially now that the bulk of the work is offloaded to a dongle. To be honest, it's a really clever idea that maximises the potential of PS2 backwards compatibility, as it allows modular emulation, bulk processing offloading and future compatibility with new consoles.

The only problem will be is when they eventually ditch the USB standard altogether, or it becomes too costly to make the PS2 hardware in this dongle form - although by this point hardware will probably so advanced software emulation for the PS2 will probably be a walk in the park and you'll be seeing "1000-in-1 PS2 games" controllers that you can connect to the TV that you buy off the chinese guy in some market in Camden :p

In all honesty I'm actually really pleased with this idea and hopefully it'll spur other console manufacturers to heed this idea for future generations. The process of creating interface software with a console dongle is significantly easier then emulating an entire system and ensuring compatibility and really ensures the financial viability of backwards compatibility (so far, with the exception of the Wii's VC and a few downloadable XBOX/PS1 games, BC has actually been a money drainer for everyone involved) for future generations. I'm loving this (Y).

I'm not exactly complaining, but well, something like this would be extremely useful for me. I'm moving out soon enough and where one PS2 has died and one I donated to someone else, this only leaves me with one PS2 in the house. However, my sister still really enjoys playing the PS2, and considering I'm taking my Wii, PS3, 360 and all of my handhelds with me, it would be extremely unfair to take my PS2 along with me as well. So, I'm now left with like 20-odd PS2 games that I can't do anything with (no - selling isn't an option lol). Having a dongle like this would be extremely useful as it means less space taken up by yet another console (and probably not that much more expensive, I'm guessing it's only going to be £49.99 RRP).
