Can I block Windows from sending certain info?

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone, after browsing http://browsercheck.qualys.com/, I noticed right on the information page, the site was able to retrieve a lot of my information, such as my screen size, browser, ip, host, etc. So, I was wondering if it was possible to at least hide information such as my browser, system date, platform, etc.? Is it possible to hide all of this information without any additional software? And if I need a program to hide all of this, are there are that are free?

Thanks :),

The person on the site probably never sees it. It just looks like they do, but in reality it's only being displayed on your browser, it never actually gets sent to the server.

It's like the old "make a hyperlink to file://C:\ and go 'I have your whole C drive!'"

learn it live it love it

Although once again, it's client side. Your browser info is usually never actually sent to the server.

Even for browser redirects, it's client side.

If you are IE go here, if you are Netscape go here. It's never sent back.

Well, the server side can infact see what you're using, by logging the data. For example, data such as your IP address, hostname, browser type, operating system, resolution, can be logged.

you can't block them from seeing what browser you have, even if you could, it doesn't matter, what are they gonna do knowing you run IE, firebird, opera. WHO CARES?

and the screen size and stuff is all done in javascript. i could send you a file that would tell you how big your window is, but it doesn't send the info anywhere.

and your IP is required, otherwise they would have no way of sending you the page  don't worry, as long as it's not "personal" info (name, phone number, email address, credit card number, etc) they have, you're fine.

I can understand a concern for privacy - but hiding the browser your using, the res of screen, and or platform your running means what??

What do they know about you?? Hiding your browser can be an issue since the site may not be able to show you the page correctly, same with screen res. As to what platform you running. Huh???

So your concerned that the site owner knows someone from ip address x.x.x.x using IE6 running his screen at 1024x768 24bit color on Windows XP came to his site???

Did your tinfoil hat fall off or something?? Tell you what you do, put an extra layer of tinfoil on the windows and ceiling - so as to block the sat from watching you. Then turn your computer off - and unplug it, since if its plugged in - they can find you!! ;)

 hehe :shifty:

and relativity: you can change the useragent for IE in the registry ;)

I believe Norton Internet Security can block some browser info (like if you're using IE6), but you'll actually find a lot of sites won't work if such info is blocked (like imdb.com).

Depending on what you're worried about and why, it's your IP address that would likely be of greatest concern. With a decent firewall, and perhaps some form of relatively dynamic IP, as long as you're not up to a lot of intentional malicious behavior or something, you'd have little to worry about. I'd probably be more focused on clearing cookies regularly and the like, but I'm not an expert.
