Um... it depends what you want to do.

If you want to share a cable or DSL connection you can put a wireless card in your desktop in addition to the wired one for the cable modem. Use ICS and create an ad-hoc (card to card) network by connecting the desktop wireless card to the laptop's built in wireless. But you'll always have to have the desktop on to use the laptop, plus you'll get bad range.

Get a wired/wireless combo router, plug the cable modem into it, and plug your desktop's wired ethernet card into it. Then use your laptop's wireless ability to connect to the router.

If you don't want to share a net connection, card to card should do fine for you.

You don't need a wireless ap + cable/dsl router, but its the easiest.

Linksys BEFW11S4 or Linksys WRT54G.

As long as you have Cable/DSL Then setting up via these solutions is very easy.

but the tech said i'm basically already connected, all i have to do is set it up through windows...how do i do that?

connected via what?

In order to have wireless you much have two access points.

Either two Adapter cards are a Wireless AP and an Adapter card.
