Blu-ray 3D Disc Playback Support Coming to PlayStation 3 System Next Week

Hi everyone, I wanted to share some news out of Tokyo Game Show. We've announced that the PS3 system will be able to play back 3D content on Blu-ray 3D discs with the next system software update (v.3.50), slated for release on September 21. We know that many consumers have purchased 3D TVs already and more of you will be purchasing them as the holidays approach ? so we're excited to offer this firmware update that makes all 38 million PS3s worldwide compatible with Blu-ray 3D discs.

This new feature expands the PS3's 3D capabilities ? as you may recall, we added the ability to play stereoscopic 3D games with the 3.30 firmware update in April.

While support for Blu-ray 3D discs is the primary new feature within the 3.50 update, there will be a few additional features. We'll post more details on the blog prior to the firmware's release, so check back here on Monday.

XMB Netflix is scheduled to come out around this time and there's been a rumor going around that the internet browser will receive an update in this firmware

A new browser would be nice, sooner rather than later.

I would too, but I think it's a limitation of the console? The browser that we get now is a mobile browser essentially, isn't it? I would love to see Chrome on the PS3.

That is nice and i was trying to recall where i heard that rumors about browser getting an update and was wondering if it was going to happen because i remember reading it some time ago.

Lets see whether this update brings a browser update or not.

Also, I read this on another site, the PS3 might be reaching its limit as to its capabilities as a Blu-Ray player. It's not going to be powerful enough to play Blu-Ray 3D and BD-Java at the same time, so you won't be able to access java menus or extras while playing back 3D on a PS3.

Any source on this as I've not heard anything like this?

If anything the PS3 is one of the most powerful BD players out there given it's access to system ram and processor. If the PS3 is at it's limit I would love to know what some of these other 3D players have under the hood.

Thanks, hadn't seen this. The are only speculating at this point though and given that the firmware hasn't yet been released it's strange how they already 'know' this. I guess time will tell.

Looks like they are basing it on the spec on Blu-ray 3D from their notation.

Yeah, it doesn't affect me but is slightly disappointing if true. But then again it's still an impressive media centre machine.

netflix will be added once their deal with microsoft runs out. Until then, it is the stupid disc swapping. Of course, if you have all the movie cable channels, netflix is useless and offers subpar resolution for even HD video.

Hmmm, yes and no. Impressive though it is, I long for a proper media centre app on it. Something to organise my media, and be a simple pleasure to use. The XMB seems so basic and lifeless to me.

Additional features include more Facebook and ability to "report" PSN messages.

Having earlier confirmed the new 3.50 firmware for the PS3, the Sony Japan website has now revealed the additional features of the update.

On top of the already confirmed 3D Blu-ray playback, Facebook connectivity will increase and will allow users (at least from what we can gather from the translation) to post what game they're playing on the social networking site. Moreover, you can now report messages from the XMB which will be a much-welcomed feature for those of you who recieved spam over PSN.

IIRC that exclusivity ended last month. That's if it is true that they held it for a year.
