PS3 Firmware 3.50 (3D Blu-Ray movie support & possibly XMB Netflix)

I usually get slow speeds as well but tonight is different  Wonder if it's because I changed my DNS to OpenDNS yesterday...

Nope, if your original DNS servers were slow it would only have sped up the initial name resolution of hostname to IP address. Once that's out of the way (which should be less than a couple of seconds even with a junk DNS server) the connection is nothing to do with DNS in any way.

Going to update now, and I shall time it from the end of the menu where I can select for it to turn off straight afterwards so I don't have to interact with it at any point.

*starts*

*finishes*

Took, according to my phones stopwatch, "04:56.7", phew, that is long, nearly grew a full beard and died of old age. :p

The update took a whole like 4 minutes for me to download and install... where is this change in plus network? I just noticed they finally updated the plus content, after failing to do it last thursday. lol

First of all I believe companies realize that 3d is not the biggest thing since LCD, but I do believe they think if they don't hop on the bandwagon then they will be left behind. Also, I don't know why everyone gets so worked up about netflix? I mean its like 10 buck a month for crappy old movies that look "OK" at best. I'd rather just get HBO or Starz from my cable company and get their on demand content, which is alot better than netflix, for about the same price of 15 bucks a month.

Wow. Have you even used Netflix?

I pay $8.99 a month for Netflix, and that gets me:

Unlimited DVDs of an insane library of old and new movies and TV shows.

Unlimited viewing of TVs shows and movies (again, old and new) on my iPhone and Wii.

Unlimited viewing of HD TV shows and movies (old and new) on my computers and PS3.

I don't understand how you think it's $10 a month for "crappy old movies". It streams HD content, unlimited viewings, new movies and TV shows - all on-demand. And it even works on my freaking cell phone. I can literally pull my phone out of my pocket at any time and load up Dave Chappelle Show, District 9, or any one of thousands of other TV shows and movies, and just watch.

I don't have to pay for cable or anything. I don't have to pirate crap or sit on P2P sites looking for TV shows to fill up my disk space with. I just watch what I want, when I want, for $8.99 a month (which is *not* the same price of "about 15 bucks").

And it's not just me, my daughter and wife can pull up what they want to watch whenever they want. Netflix works on all of our stuff. We watch HD content from the comfort of our living room on our big HDTV.

It's an amazing (and cheap) product. It's no wonder they are piling on new subscribers by the minute. It replaces broadcast TV, cable, and movie rentals, for $8.99! Maybe that is why people get so "worked up" about Netflix.

Netflix is great.

I can't wait for it to be integrated into the PS3 natively. I'd like a Netflix Wii channel as well. That disc is annoying.

Their HD streaming is by no means HD in my book. The PS3 upscales DVDs better than Netflix HD streaming looks. But they do offer a good price for unlimited movies. Just wish their selection was different than what HBO, Cinemax, and Stars offered. Because right now with my cable package, I get all those movies, on demand as well, in a better HD picture.

you speak the truth.

Netflix is amazing.

i pay like $17/mo for 2-rentals-at-a-time, Streaming, blu-ray option. it's great. streaming looks really nice when you have a fast connection - they have an ever-growing selection. what really makes me happy is the constant addition of more and more tv shows. it's great.

Since applying the 3.50 update, my PS3 has started to stutter when playing any game. Prior to updating the firmware for example, the Fifa 2011 demo ran flawlessly but now there is a slight stutter / lag at random times that wasn't present before. The cheers of the crowd actually stop for a fraction of a second, as does the game then resumes as per normal.

It's worrying me as I'm wondering if my hard drive is about to fail. I don't mind replacing the hard drive, it's just I am not looking forward to re-applying all the game updates, re-downloading our large Singstar / PS Store purchases all over again *sigh*.

I'll let you know if i have any issues after lunch lol. I did my update around 12 midnight last night as it was released, then passed out after it finished. But I'm trying to finish uncharted 2 today, so I'll let you know if anything happens on mine.

Don't own fifa, but since applying the update I've had no problems with COD MW2....

I'll throw in GTA IV for tests too, but that games has never ran the best on my ps3 as is.

That sucks man.

While I don't know about Singstar, but if you use the backup manager option in the settings, it will backup pretty much everything to an external hard drive, this includes all Daves, Downloads and stuff in the Game Data folder which is where game updates are kept and I would assume Sing Store stuff?

Though I would personally delete all game installs that are over a few hundred megabytes, demo's and any games you don't mind downloading again as the smaller the amount it needs to back up, the less time and less chance of something going wrong with it, Drunknmunky did a backup the other day and he got an error in one of his files which looks to be a certain games Game Data as its the only thing it didn't restore, and he had already erased his old PS3 Hard drive so couldn't back up again just in case.

The PlayStation 3 update v3.50 ? which today was available to download ? was meant to bring 3D Blu-ray support to the console. However, after trying to play a 3D blu-ray on my PS3, there seems to be some problems with the update. The only way to describe the effects I experienced is that the console wasn?t able to keep up with the 3D image on the screen. This led to a blurry picture where there was movement on the screen, and it gave me a bit of a headache looking at it. There have also been other reports that some people cannot get their 3D blu-rays working at all on the system saying that they aren?t recognized.

Hopefully another update will be out soon enough to fix these bugs, but in the mean time don?t get rid of your 3D blu-ray player just yet, just in case it?s a while.

err I'm not sure but it seems something is messed up with my PS3 Media Server after 3.50.

It is taking forever to fast forward and skip parts of mkvs. Sigh.

hmm I tested it again, and same thing. This kind of sucks. Have you trying skipping minutes in mkvs? like going from minute 1:07 to like 12:07.

It used to take 5-10 seconds, now it is a few minutes.
