Need help getting past my ISP

Recommended Posts

From what he's saying it seems that's what they did, closed all inbound ports.. That way he won't be able to run any type of a server... Conserve the bandwith, since this connection has to be good enough for everybody in the building...

My point is that people have likely already complained about a certain commonly used service not working properly.

They may have every inbound port closed with a few exceptions that they consider innocent.

My advice was to think of some legitimate use, like ICQ, and use that port for the FTP site.

Of course, that assumes that you don't need to run ICQ at the same time.

Last time I checked, ICQ wanted port 4000.

They don't need to open that port. Reason for that is when you start ICQ it'll open up the port on the router itself... It's outgoing traffic. Once you shut ICQ off, that port might stay open and you might accomplish what you want to do.. But I still say save yourself the hassle and get your own internet connection...

Last time I looked at ICQ, it had a firewall configuration page. That suggests to me that at least some functionality in ICQ requires an incoming port (TCP 4000).

Temporary outbound ports are usually opened as UDP connections.

Now it may be that most ICQ users don't need this unless they are transferring files or doing something more advanced. So it may be that most ICQ users can live with the ISP closing port 4000 for incoming connections and not even notice.

You are right, however, that this person REALLY NEEDS A NEW ISP!
