What script to recommend?

Question

Hey,

I'm just wondering if there are any good open-source solutions for review sites - and by that I mean IGN-type reviews (But not about gaming, about a wide range of things) as well as the odd standard non-review type article.

I know WordPress would be good but my PHP knowledge is extremely limited so I doubt I'd be able to add the necessary features I'd like to add without lots of help.

Unless there's a good theme / someone who would be willing to code stuff for me? But I'd only be able to offer like $100 at the most.

I've seen s few fairly good video game review themes on themeforest.net, but they're just limited to games. I don't think I'd be able to adapt them to cover more categories (products, tv shows, films etc) without it getting insanely busy.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

You don't HAVE to use the game review themes for that specifically. You can easily edit the theme to how YOU want it not how they designed it to work.

That being said Wordpress would really be your best solution. :) You can always toss me a PM if you ever get stuck and need help; I'd be more than willing to help here and there!

Thanks. :]

I got a theme called 'ReviewIt', but the design is absolutely dreadful, and it takes a lot of setting up and everything has to be done in a really specific way in order to look okay so I won't do that. >.>

Would you recommend I just code my own theme up? Is it just a case of designing the layout and then whacking in wordpress-specific php bits? I could do that. :p

.. I think.

You could go the route of coding your own up but it doesn't really matter. If you can get it done quickly (if time is a concern) then going with pre-built would be best. Otherwise if you want to start from scratch grab this: http://starkerstheme.com. This is a completely fresh and clean theme you can work from.

Okay, so I have coded up a design in a way where I'd probably be able to convert it into a more dynamic, template-based format without too much bother, but there are still many things I know I won't be able to do without help (but I know what I want is not impossible to do, so that's at least a positive here!).

I'm really happy with the design I've done, it's probably the nicest and most polished thing I've ever done. If I do have issues with WordPress though, I have acquired a free copy of Microsoft Expression Web 4 Ultimate for my college course, and it seems to read and interpret XHTML and newer code really well, which is weird. But, yeah. That may be an alternative, but I would have to ditch some 'features' I intend to put in (Like a comment and user system.. which WordPress automatically does.. so I hope it won't come to that!)

Basically most of the features I'd have to pop in are review/rating-related, some sort of 'Like' system that isn't Facebook's, user log in, forum integration and other stuff like grabbing an image and placing it somewhere else, making an image slider (but in a weird, specific way that doesn't play well with the regular JQuery sliders you see... :(), and I reckon that's about it.

Seems doable, no? :| Expect about a bazillion PM's. ... Naw. Maybe a few. >.>
