asy1mpo
Hi I have a file that does not delete?? It is a movie (.avi) file that was on CDR but a copied it to my hard disk. Now i want to delete but when i delete (both methods - to recycle bin and also shift delete) it says cannot delete - Cannot delete ....: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using ... i have closed al progs - still no delete Any ideas
mtgriffith
Make sure it is not write protected. Files burned to CD then copied down to your hard drive are write protected by default.
asy1mpo
Its not read only - it is archieve though - whatever that means

linsook
highligh the avi file, and go grab a drink, come back in a minute or two and then push delete :D , it'll work
mortensen
I also have a non-deleteable file and it too is a .avi file. I have obviously rebooted and have even tried deleting it with Task Manager running [which has helped me to delete other files b4]. It's only 11mb but it is annoying... it says it's in use but it obviously isn't in use deliberately [God knows what screwed up things Windows does to these files... I guess it may be attempting to preview it which is locking it up... I had that problem with a .PSD Photoshop file, which I deleting by restarting and deleting the folder it was in]. Filename: kazaadownload100074058615232082.dat.avi :(
Silent
Just boot with a dos boot disk and then delete the file and then reboot your system as normal. Any file that windows holds can be removed this way. Silent:lick:
mtgriffith
Archive means that a tape backup will back it up if you ran one. Since it is not read only boobless is probably right. Something is accessing the file. When you reboot it will either disappear or it will let you delete it.
linsook
even though you reboot, everytime you highlight the file, explorer will access the file, i have no idea what its doing so..... likei said, highlight wait a min...... then push delete. Matrox
The reason explorer accesses the file is to open it for preview to show the first frame of you have this view enabled. All you need to do is select the files and wait a lil while and then delete. -Matrox
Blahsted
I had the same problem with a avi file, I moved it to another hd then formated it, seemed to get rid of it :)

Khujo
I too have the same problem with my movie files and a couple of directories on the same drive, its really annoying not being able to get my space back and not wanting to move 20 gigs of dvd rips just to format a drive and put them back :/
boobless
asy1mpo, take a screen shot of your task manager and post it here. lets see what programs are running in the background and if any of them might be accessing the file.

whattupdisgene
from what i understand, XP is very picky about who has access to what files. some files, although possible to be viewed under another user account, may not be deleted if it wasn't previously created by that particular user. i suggest switching to the user account that created the file in question, and perform a delete from there. also with progams such as kazaa, if a file is in the progress of downloading and is interrupted, the file will become undeletable. often a simple fix for this would be to shut down the program for the current user account, as well as for other user accounts that are logged on XP and then delete the file from there. hope this helps?? C@N'T }{1T $}{1
It's windows media player previewing it in the preview pane. Create a text file, select it, CTRL and select the avi, and delete them both. That works.
semifamous
I'm having something similar happening to me... Perhaps one of you knows the answer. In C:Program Files, I have some folders I'd like to delete. One is MSN Gaming Zone (which I'll never use) and another is "xerox". Windows won't let me delete them, but the only thing in there are more empty folders. A DOS Boot Disk won't work on my NTFS, or I'd do that. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make Windows let me delete those? Or does this happen to everybody? Thanks, Mike
jebus
Make sure you have the NTFS security rights to delete the file.

mtgriffith
Does Morpheus open on startup? Is Morpheus running in the tray when you are trying to delete the folder? Make sure that Morpheus knows it is not supposed to use that folder.
