Stealing bandwidth

Recommended Posts

I am on a lan at work, and my connection is damn slow...why...cause everyone is chatting in romance rooms and stuff. I would like to know...how can I limit their bandwidth without them knowing that i did, and get more for me, so that i can see Neowin faster?? I am not an admin, but I do have the user/pass and I can not go and play on the server.

How do I do it??

Bad idea.

You have no right to decide who gets more bandwidth, or who's surripticious activities on the web are more important. If you feel uncomfortable about talking to your admin about doing something for you, then you most definitely shouldn't do it yourself. Are you supposed to be surfing Neowin on the job? Is that what they're paying you to do (if so, please contact me with details on how to contact your employer, I want your job).

If you aren't supposed to be doing this, then it isn't any more wrong than looking at porn or chatting in romance rooms. If I were your boss, and I found out about this, I'd boot you without a second thought, not just for surfing Neowin, but for manipulating the network for your own entertainment.

True, I have to agree with you. I want to manipulate the network to the advantage of myself. I am a self centered pig that only wants the world to revolve around me. Thank you for clearing up my views for me. I feel very bad about what I asked.

While at it, ask my boss to give me work...or better...rather let me stay at home when they have something for me that I can keep myself busy with, let me come to work, rather than having the expense of coming to work, and ask him to give me a raise aswell.

Otherwise...give me an answer if you would not mind or keep your nose clean.

Thank you

I understand your desire to surf the Internet faster, but there might be a reason the network feels lagged. You haven't told us what kind of connection you ahve at work, but if everyone is "chatting about romance" then I conclude two things: 1) they can't be using that much bandwidth, and 2) you are probably working at a small company in cubicles where management doesn't walk by too much. There must be a bottleneck elsewhere.

Perhaps your workplace only has an SDSL connection (DSL = suck). Cable is much better for downloading IMHO, and much cheaper than DSL. However, if your business was at all concerned about speed, they should have purchased a T1 or partial T3. Then you wouldn't have any constraints.

Maybe your sysadmin is doing the very things you propose to do yourself...like surfing Neowin on the job! ;)

We have an ISDN line, 128, and when this one woman opposite me leaves, then the whole net is maybe 200% faster. It isnt a big company, but I would still like to know how. I was the admin for the LAN for a few months, until the new guy came, and then he took over. Does that help?

I will agree with Relativity_17. No one here on Neoiwin will help you do anything illegal. What you are asking is illlegal. Your home computer is for doing the web browsing stuff not your work computer. So live with it. IF not give us the contact info for your company. It would be nice to set you straight.

heres the tip, unplug her network cable

or go into her pc and rename/delete/corrupt a system file. then she aint gonna hog the bandwidth, until its fixed. im sure you can think of other things

i am all for personal gain, be selfish. become too considerate and people (like me) will walk all over you. if you gain something out of a situation in which there are no/petty consequances, do it (within reason obviously).

this week of jackass on the Job. We find unscrupulous co-workers damaging company property for their benefit. Are they really that stupid? Stay tuned to find out...

Theres an awful lot of these type of threads recently on Neowin, ie 'im at work/school (delete as appropriate) and I cant use the web/want to use the web faster (again delete as appropriate) can you help me bypass this please'

Whilst it probably seems like a good if you could, I have to agree with Relativity_17, your in work for exactly that reason, too work. If you don't like it then I suggest that you leave your job and stay at home, you can then have all the time in the world to come online and enjoy Neowin and the internet and not let piddling little things like life and earning a living get in your way.

Just my tuppence worth ...

*edit*

Maybe all the people who think they are hard done by because they cant do exactly as they wish at work, in works time had best have a look at THIS THREAD ... Happy Sys. Admin Day

God, what do people want from their lives. I am on a real pathetic 32 kbps cable line and I am pretty happy with what I got. There are most probably billion+ people in this world who might have NO ACCESS to the net. So, I feel I am better with what I got. And you people cry over isdn lines.

i hardly class what i would do as damaging property. damaging would be if i threw it on the floor or attacked it with a hammer. renaming a file? whoopy-fooking-do! sue me.

im not saying your wrong, you are actually right. :D but just stating my way of thinking. :p

Break that womans Cat-5 cable, sounds the logical thing to do? But then you might have to do her work instead?

I stand corrected...:unsure:e:

If you want to be down right nasty. Find out what sites she hangs out on. Then once she leaves modify your and hers (any anyone else in the office) hosts file to that the site she is going to is the loop back address (127.0.0.1). This way when she tries to get to the sites again they won't come up, and you can show her on your machine the same problem if she asks.

But in all fairness, deal with it.... :ninja:

Ask the admin if he can do something about it, if he's nice and caring he'll find out. Tell him about the lady and he'll probably go look on her PC what's wrong. My concern at work is that the current network uses hubs instead of switches and therefore when the local "i want all the bandwidth, gimme more so I can entertain myself while people want to use the net for REAL work" guy decides to download stuff using kazaa (like warez and porn) my security advisories and patches downloads are slowing down and timing out.

You said you were self-centric with sarcasm, but you spoke the words of the truth. The internet access at your workplace is not a right, but a privilege. Be thankful for what you have, if you want more, ask the system admin.

Well now at work it's all better since we changed the sucky dual channel ISDN line for a 3.2megabits ADSL.

Oh... the joy.

exactly... without being an admin or someone with control you cant do anything on your network

But, you can however, go rat out all your co-workers and that will free up bandwidth...
