Thinking of getting a Canon PowerShot G12

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am thinking of buying a Canon PowerShot G12 when it is released next week (October 8th). I had a G11 and loved it. I had a 40D which I sold when I didn't have time (or money) to spend on such an expensive camera. The G11 was a very nice middle ground camera giving great results but without the overhead of a dSLR. I sold my G11 a few months ago as I needed the cash more but now things have balanced out for me I am thinking of getting the new G12. I don't have the money to spend on a dSLR and my previous experience with the G11 makes me want the G12. I know it is expensive and I could spend a little more and get a 500D or similar from another company but I don't really want something the size of a dSLR at the moment.

I was wondering what others opinions are. What competitors are there to the G12 from other makes such as Sony and Panasonic?

My maximum is ?500 and that is pushing it a bit above what I would like to spend to be honest, the G12 is ?450.

For that kind of money I'd look into a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera such as the Sony NEX series or a Micro Four Thirds from Panasonic or Olympus.

The NEX has a large APS-C sensor though the zoom lens is kinda large to slip it in your pocket (you could also get it with a 16/2.8 pancake lens for less but you wouldn't have the zoom, or you could get both). In it's defense, the G12 is pretty big as well.

The NEX also has adapters for most mounts of lenses and can actually AF Sony A-mount lenses with built in motors with the official adapter (and with the new firmware update).

The Sony NEX-5 looks very interesting although it is a bit more than I wanted to pay. Seems that it is better than similar offerings from Panasonic, etc.

The advantage is that it uses a larger APS-C sensor rather than a four thirds sensor (which is still decently large, but smaller).

Also look into the NEX 3, it is very similar from what I can remember.

Here's the list of differences (aside from the physical body itself):

Ugh after spending the past couple of hours reading about all the different cameras I am now torn between the following; Canon PowerShot G12 or, Sony NEX-5 (dual lens kit is pretty good value) or, Panasonic GF1 or biting the bullet and getting a Canon EOS 550D (18-55mm lens kit) as it is only a little more than the rest and the reviews are pretty epic. Damn I am stuck for choice now! :(

I think I am gonna save up a little more and get the 550D, if I am going to spend ?500 on a camera I might as well save a little bit more and get a full on dSLR again for ?150 more I figure.

I think that if you definitely want the smaller size then a NEX or M4/3 would also be nice. If you prefer more physical controls then do go for the DSLR.
