xEonBuRn
Damn, I've spent the entire day tryin to get my bro's comp online with a new router... My dad's and mine worked fine and his was workin when he was just hooked up to the normal hub for the cable modem. Anyway, I tried different net cards, upgraded to XP then reinstalled XP and still it didn't work... finally, at the end of my rope, I tried a different network cable... :dead: I don't know why the network cable was suddenly bad cuz it was workin before I put in the router, but that was the prob. wd40
The extra PC is an example on how you can expand in the future if you want to. Hope that works for you.
wd40
xEonBuRn It was probably a cross over cable.
Flip_Kid
Thanks so much ... and sorry for being so picky , but with this configuration it doesn't seem that the 98 computer has access to the internet (or if it does it's shared with the other one..) I wanted to have seperate ip addresses for both ... is it still feasible this way?
wd40
Not if you want to share files you can't have it like that. The 2 computers need to be on the same network and with different IP's like you had you can't share files. Try a subnet mask of 16.0.0.0 or 8.0.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0 for the mask on the XP box for the 10 net address. Can your 98 box ping 66.183.34.84? Can your 98 box ping 10.0.0.1? Flip_Kid
Yes it can ping 66.183.34.84 and no it can't ping 10.0.0.1 (request timed out)
wd40
So let me get this straight. Your Win98 box (IP of 10.0.0.2) can ping 66.183.34.84 but not the gateway address of 10.0.0.1? That is weird. Set subnet masks to 255.255.255.0 on the 10 net address boxes and see if you can ping 10.0.0.1 and .2 back and forth and then ping 66.183.34.84. Once you can ping both 10.0.0.1 and 66.183.34.84 you should be all set.
xEonBuRn
wd40, what do u mean a cross over cable?
wd40
xEonBuRn Cross over cables are used to connect a router to a hub/switch etc. Like my Cisco 675, I use a cross over cable to connect it to my hub and then regular cat 5 cables to connect the hub to the computers. I can't remember why right off hand why. You could check around. It's the way the wires are arranged is why it's called a cross over cable. Geronimo
two sets of the eight wires are crossed. This is so you dont have to throw a hub in to translated the lines. Here is link that explains it alittle bit with a pic.
