PlazzTT
Hi, I got an ADSL Modem recently (ZyXEL), it just has two ports at the back (USB and DSL Phone Line). If I buy a Wireless Router, how will it be connected to the modem? Will I have to have one PC switched on all the time if other computers on the network want to use the Internet? Also, can anyone recommend a good G54 wireless router? One more question, is there a good ADSL optimiser software somewhere? Thank you.
Steven
In order to use a Cable/Dsl Router you must have an Ethernet Port on your Cable or DSL Modem, without it, such a task is impossible.
xelencin
In order to use a Cable/Dsl Router you must have an Ethernet Port on your Cable or DSL Modem, without it, such a task is impossible. actually aciontec has a dsl router, that supports usb modems, on their site it claims they only support actiontec dsl modems, but ive seen success with other brands of dsl modems if you got the router to work successfully, your pc would not have to be turned on, only the router and the modem, and whatever pc's are connected to the router would have internet access. i would call your isp and request they send u a ethernet modem, when i worked for aol we had to send customers ethernet compatible modems if they didnt want to get the actiontec router http://www.actiontec.com/products/index.html Edited July 26, 2003 by chrisxtreme
John Veteran Posted July 26, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 26, 2003 i don't think it's impossible, but it won't work quite like you want. connect the usb to a desktop computer (one that's on all the time). then run an ethernet cable from the NIC on the desktop to a wireless router. open control panel\network connections. you should see one for your cable/dsl modem and one for your wireless router. right click the one for your cable/dsl modem and choose properties. on the advanced tab, check the box to enable internet connection sharing. this is where my experience ends, as i don't have two connections to try this myself. but once you get ICS working, you should be able to get internet access through that wireless router whenever the desktop is turned on.
