Wireless Adapters

Recommended Posts

hello,

I'm going to be transfering to a different school this up coming year and they have a wireless campus. I already have a Inspiron 8500 Dell laptop but need help on what wireless network card to get. Campus currently only had the 802.11b standard, but if cost isn't much more i'd like a dual band card to support a/b/g specifications.

Currently i love linksys and never had problems with any of their hardware so i'm looking at this adapter currently:

My question is: Do you recommend this card and does anyone else have any recommendations for a card such as Netgear or anything. Currently this linksys is only 49.99 after rebate at Bestbuy so if anyone can match up a cheaper card and hassle free card let me know.

And if a laptop supports integrated wireless (mini-PCI), is that better than using a PCMCIA wireless card?

For integrated wireless you have to buy the board or whatever you want to call it directly from Dell, not sure if there is any difference though.

Like others have said, pretty much all PCMCIA wireless cards are the same. If you weren't interested in the G standard I would recommend getting a USRobotics card because there B standard cards have support to operate at near 54Mbs to each other, only works with other USR cards though (I think).

When i bought my laptop i choose not to get the mini-PCI. Rather have a card, and a PCMCIA card is just as much as the mini-PCI card if i had bought from Dell at time of purchase.

I know i can buy a card from any vendor, but in some ppl's experience some cards work hassle free than others. Like Linksys cards are high quality and I for myself have never had a problem, but now Dlink nics i've had my share of problems.
