Neowin Main Page Design..

Question

hi guys..i've been visiting neowin for about 4-5 years and all this time i didn't register coz i was just checking news and new software but lately i've realized how the main page of neowin looks and wanted to say it's not very good considering the empty left and right spaces because of the wide screen monitors that are mostly used resolutions right now. It's just so much empty space just waiting there.I don't suppose there are ads there because it looks same in IE.What do you think?

No, there aren't ads there. The main page Neowin kept to a 990px grid for the homepage and for the forums kept it fluid.

You just have to remember that your resolution (and of course browser resolution preference) are not the same nor is everyone utilizing large resolutions. You have to consider that there are people on netbooks, Macbook Pros, other brand laptops.. that will never have large resolutions so a >1000px grid is just fine.

My monitor is 1080p and I usually browse Firefox while it's fully maximized. Yes, Neowin does look a bit tiny in it but.. But my viewport is 1913px. It's not that standard nor does everyone keep browsers fullscreen. I've seen some people that keep it resized as they like to utilize the monitor space to multitask with several apps.

So yes, you have to ignore the fact that YOU'RE using a large resolution and remember that a lot of people AREN'T.

This has been discussed to death during the restyling of Neowin and it's just the way it is. This means greater compatibility with all users.

Also there is a certain length of line that makes for easy reading (don't ask me what) but anything longer makes it hard for users to read properly.

I would agree. As a computer repair person that remotes in and goes to a lot of homes. I can tell you to see a 20 inch screen is VERY rare and a 24 inch screen is practically unheard of. Usually they have a 17 or a 19 inch monitor.

I hope you're not blocking our ads :(

And as mentioned a couple of times above, the average resolution size is 1024 x 768. I have 2 wide screen monitors as my desktop and it does look a little weird, but it fits my laptop resolution perfectly fine :)

Heres somethings you might not know.

Our content column is the exact same size of other sites (ie engadget/gizmodo). Also the sites width is 995px which is more than enough.

What makes it look so thin and not widescreen friendly. Is the lack of a white / very light background.

Edit:

What we can do (i'll look into it) make a checkbox that'll make the site fluid but it'll remove stuff like news logos from posts.

Hej, Nothing wrong with it from what I can tell...

I have it snapped to one side of the screen (Win7) using a 1920x1080 resolution on a 24" screen... looks fine for me, also leaves me half the screen for other things such as audio/video/photoshop (not something I often do on half a screen, usually use the second screen for it)/etc...

Do what I do, don't maximize your software when it don't need to be on large widescreen monitors. Instead of maximizing it, just make it a considerably large window... you get to enjoy the look of the Aero border with the shadow, as well as seeing your desktop around it as well. Looks better, and you won't have to worry about wasted space from webpages like this one.

All I ever maximize are Photoshop, Videos, and Games. Anything else would be ridiculous waste of space, and would look bad on the desktop.
