Shopping Carts...

Question

Hi Guys,

Basically ive got a friend who has a very basic HTML website with a few pages, photo gallery and contact form page, its very simple. He is looking to get a shopping cart system built into his site and has asked me if i could help. As im just a IT Techy i really dont know much about websites but ive dabbled in the passed.

Instead of creating a shopping cart system from scratch i would like to buy an off-the-shelf alternative, the benefits of this would be its pre-made, and should come with some form of support incase problems come up.

What off the shelf shopping cart system would you guys suggest? I am based in the UK but aslong as the cart supports the ? it doesnt matter where its from.

Thanks alot!

I've done quite a few Cart setups for people over the years and so far (keep hoping) I have had no real problems or bad feedback.

There are quite a few Carts out there that are feature packed some of which are free. My most recent was a Magento based store which was quite heavy going as I had never used it before, and there was me trying to teach someone to use the damn thing. Was rather nerve racking.

What is your friend looking for? Are there going to be hundreds of products, or is it a simple < 20 items sort of thing. What items are they? You also need to take in to account the payment methods. Is your friend going to be happy accepting payments through PayPal or are they going to need something a little more substantial such as SagePay to accept hundreds of Credit Card Payments.

Pop me a PM with a bit more info and I'd be happy to guide you a little more.

I would say he will be room for upto 100 products, but not straight away.

As for payment types, he uses a ebay store at the moment so paypal is being used everyday, i will have to ask him to find out if hes happy to use this still or wants to move over to something abit more widly accepted.

Thanks for the offer Grayski, ill drop you a PM when ive got all the info if thats ok :)

Cheers tomcoleman i will check them out!

So do you need a full-fledged cart right off the bat? I'd recommend Mangento then. While Magento is pretty bloated.. it is probably the best ecommerce option I've used out of all of the others. I've seen some horrible ones (xcart to name off top of head.)

If you need something VERY basic to start off with for the time being, definitely look at simplecartJS. You can get it setup within minutes and you do have Paypal and Google Checkout integration as well. :)

Another really good one is OpenCart. That's what my company uses, and works pretty well. Has most of the basic features, and a not bad amount of extensions for whatever else you might need.

Has PayPal integrated as well.

It's also not as bloated as some of the other ones as well, which is nice. Fairly user friendly.

Heh! I'm probably going to give OpenCart a go first as its free, open source and seems to have a community forum which I like :)
