Advice on hosting (UK)

Question

I am currently building a website for a company, they want a site which they can update easily and quickly without having to resort to coding as they know none. I am therefore building a custom theme on top of wordpress so they can add pages and content whenever they need to.

They are currently hosting through a local company who offer them 100mb file store and bandwith with 10 emails for ?89/year. Apparently, no Mysql databases are included in this and will be an additional ?85/year for a single database.

Apparently the hosting company say they are really secure.

Does this not seem rather pricey? i dont really know much about servers etc and am on unlimited everything from my hosting site for half of this but obviously thats a big company one.

The web host also said that wordpress is not really suitable for this type of site so does anyone agree with this? Its a small business who are just getting started with their web presence.

Thanks for any help.

Generally speaking, with hosting you get what you pay for, and any company that offers unlimited anything are liars.

That does sound very pricey. I'm in UK, paying an American company for an unmanaged VPS in Germany (bit long winded, but it works) and it costs about ?45/year. It should have been quite a bit more, but I got a coupon :D

Obviously self-managed VPSs aren't everybody's cup of tea, but I was just showing that you can get quite a bit of bang for your buck without using an 'unlimited everything for ?1/month' company. Check out WHT, they have an offers section that often having lifetime coupons for all sorts of companies and plans. Also, do a good search of that forum for reviews and feedback before you commit to any particular company. There are a lot of newish companies out there who fall flat on their face in the first couple of years - so it's often a good idea to avoid new companies even if they offer amazing deals.

I would recommend WordPress, simply because it will do the job easily, if there is something it does not do somebody is almost certainly wrote a plug-in to do it.

Security is something that would be your concern when designing it rather than relying on the host.

I have found over the years support is the best thing, I have had numerous hosting packages and dedicated servers, I now have several dedicated servers it has taken me eight years to find a company that gives good support. So please bear this in mind when looking at prices.

The company I use now http://www.liquidweb.com whether it is because I'm a dedicated server customer but every support e-mail is answered within 30 min.

Yes I am from the UK, I have tried UK companies. Probably the best UK company I have found http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/

Thanks for the advice. I thought it was a bit of a rip off for the bandwidth/disk space and databases on offer. I know unlimited sites dont mean unlimited but my site is just a small blog/portfolio so i dont really

need much, however, ?174 for such a limited amount just seemed ridiculous.

will check out the site you posted thanks.

Thats what i thought about the security, like changing the wp- prefix and default admin etc. Was similiar thinking for taking the wordpress route but he fed my boss a line about it not being suitable or something.

The hosting provider also claims that he provides extra security on his servers and he guarantees people will not be able to intercept the companies emails or access the websites folders. I didnt think this was something anyone could guarantee??

Thanks both of you for your advice.

Another vote for checking out Web Hosting Talk. I found my current host (MediaLayer.com) with help from that community and couldn't be happier. For a UK host, I have seen a lot of positive feedback about rochenhost.com on WHT.

I've been very happy with http://www.bigwetfish.co.uk since I moved from the (now closed and excellent) Elixant for around 5 years now. Definitely go for a recommendation from a friend rather than plucking a host from a review site, as customer service and support goes a long way unless you're buying a dedicated server!!

A UK friend of mine uses Clook and wouldn't recommend anyone else. She had previously been with Site5 and referred them all the time but once they adopted the unlimited spiel, she left them and went to Clook. I've read nothing but positive reviews on them =)

I suppose this would be a good time to plug my company ClearHost

But another thumbs up for Site5. Been with them about 6 years and had no trouble at all. ClearHost is basically a reseller :)

That is a ripoff, move as fast as you can.

for the cheaper price I can offer you 5GB, 200GB Bandwidth

https://www.studyhost.co.uk/cart.php?gid=9

using coupon: FailOffer

For something like wordpress wth little space, we do budgets at ?12.99 a year and that still beats the ?85 a year specs

MySQL and Email limits are just marketing, as all hostings can change what is offered by just a setting, its praying on people who don't know better.

Clook are good, but expenive.

I hope your joking?

Are you just going to reply negatively about every host suggested in this thread so you can one up your advertisement? It looks tacky.

I have said Clook, is good, and I am being honest about the above, they are priced high and offer little disk space, do you disagree on that or going to use your knowledge to say otherwise?

There's being "honest" and just being tacky. Recommend your service and leave it at that. To keep replying to the other suggestions in such a condescending/negative tone ("your joking right?") reflects poorly upon you and your business.

My knowledge? Sure, if you want to hear my six years of experience on running my own hosting company, feel free to PM me. Otherwise companies have varied resources/prices because it fits their market just right. The only companies I disagree with are those that rely heavily on "unlimited" resources and prey on clients to disregard the ToS/AUP on resource usage specifications.

So, on a thread asking for advice, you think its wrong for someone to use experice rather then someone be misled? On your joking on Fasthosts, everything I have ever heard about them is don't touch them, so, you'd recommend keeping quiet on what many years experience has filtered through? I disagree.

I would recommend Innohosting above the rest, always heard good things and I have used them myselve.

If you dont' want to give advice fine, but don't start a personal fight.

They need to have great support as they are very stingy on what they offer for the high price.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

NuBlue specialises in hosting e-commerce applications, and the support is top notch... be it over phone, live chat or through tickets. They really go the extra mile.
