noping
Hi, I had a question. Is it possible to add a pci 802.11b nic to my pc with cable modem.. and have two laptops with 802.11b pcmcia cards both, acces internet from, and network with, the pc. I am doing this because it would avoid me having to buy a wireless router or access point which is expensive? any idea?
NeoMayhem
yes, just set all the cards to use ad-hoc mode and setup ics on the computer with internet :p
thingsforjason
wireless routers aren't that expensive tho...if you can find something with a rebate then you're set. but yeah, ad-hoc should work. although you'll need your desktop to be on if you want internet... radioboy
won't that drastically reduce range though? I assume those antennas inside cards aren't the most powerful, plus it's inside the PC case. Buy.com has a wireless bundle of the router and laptop PCMCIA card for $130. So unless you're not looking to buy the two PCMCIA laptop cards, the cost of each laptop card is gonna run about $80 and the cost of a desktop card at least $50, probably $80 for one that will broadcast decent strength.
