Gran Turismo 5 drops below 60fps - Kaz 'begs forgiveness'

Polyphony Digital boss Kaz Yamauchi has admitted that Gran Turismo 5 occasionally dips below a 60fps frame-rate - but said that his studio is "working towards perfecting" the game.

Sony announced last week that the release of GT5 would be delayed around the world - with a US and UK launch looking likely to come in December.

Speaking to the new issue of PSM3 magazine in a must-read 10-page GT5 feature, Yamauchi said that frame-rate was a "major issue for us in GT5".

He added: "Our engineers complain every day: 'Isn't it enough that it's in 1080p? Does it have to be 60fps too?' But I think 60fps is very important, so we're working towards perfecting that. There might be times when you have a certain combination of conditions that come together - especially with the weather effects - [when] the game might briefly drop from 60fps, and for that I beg your forgiveness!

"If you're going from a standing start at No.16 and all 15 cars in front of you are kicking up water, there might not be 60fps at that moment."

You've got to appreciate his honesty.

PSM3 issue 133 - which also features the definitive pre-launch verdict on Call of Duty: Black Ops - is with subscribers now, and will be in store later this week.

:sleep2:

The game has set it's ambitions so high that it's never going to meet all the promises and no doubt get a huge backlash from press & gamers.

You shouldn't set out to do the impossible, i.e "create the perfect game". It just can't be done.

I hope they learn big time with this and drop their superficial "nothing but the best" attitude.

I dont see this being a huge issue - I wish he would have said just how much it drops though. If it drops to 50 FPS then I dont see any problems.. but if it drops to 30 at any point then I am sure the backlash will never stop.. I have already decided that this is def a rent first game..

I thought the human eye couldn't tell the difference after 30 FPS? As long as it stays above that then who cares. If it drops below then that may suck.

This is what I thought too. When I used to play extensively on my PC 2-3 years ago, 30FPS was always the mark...

Is the 60FPS target to do with LCD screens or something?

OMG THE GAME DROPS TO 57FPS FOR A FEW SECONDS IN CERTAIN PLACES

I'M GOING TO REPORT HIM TO MY LOCAL MP AND SETUP A JIHAD

Your pic sums up my emotion about this outrage :(

You can definitely tell the difference. Things just look smoother. However, it's not nearly as jarring as the difference between, say, 20 FPS and 30 FPS.

My eye's are no better than anybody else's, but I can tell the diffrence between 80 and 100 fps, infact I can tell the diffrence between 100 and 120.

Most hardcore CS players will tell you the same thing.

If someone has been playing games at 30fps or less all of their lives, then the first 60fps game they play will feel like they're playing in fast forward LOL

I swear I've already read

"If you're going from a standing start at No.16 and all 15 cars in front of you are kicking up water, there might not be 60fps at that moment."

somewhere before in the last few weeks, so this can't be new news, lol.

Obviously this is the fault of those dirty pirates stealing the FPS’s!

I share your sentiment. I say we should all write angry emails, demand a 3 week delay, express our disappointment & we won't settle for anything less than 60fps.
