PSP2 Will Be Bigger, Out Fall 2011, Currently Overheating

Around the time of the Tokyo Game Show, Sony held a private meeting at its offices in Tokyo's Aoyama. The purpose was to show off the PSP2.

Several sources have confirmed to Kotaku that the PSP2 does have a previously rumored touch panel on the back of the hardware. The touch panel was described as looking like a big mouse trackpad. When Sony showed the PSP2, it did not provide concrete details regarding how the trackpad will be implemented in games and instead is leaving that to the discretion of game developers.

The screen itself is not only sharper than the current PSP's, but about an inch larger. The larger screen means that the PSP2 will be larger as well. In the private meetings, Sony is touting the screen as "HD".

A larger PSP should not be that big of an issue for Sony ? especially in a mobile environment with large tablets like the iPad. It also shows that Sony realizes it is no longer simply competing with Nintendo, but also Apple.

It is unclear whether this is the same handheld described by the Wall Street Journal. According to the the paper, Sony is working on a device that mixes a game player, an e-book reader and a netbook computer.

In late September, there were also reports that the PSP2 hardware was in the hands of "numerous" developers.

Currently, the PSP2's hardware is not finalized, and Sony is having problems balancing battery, power and heat. There are apparently overheating issues, but Sony is, of course, aiming to have those issues corrected by the time the hardware is publicly shown.

Sony set the PSP2's goals, but is still tinkering with the portable's innards. The PSP2's tech specs are expected to change.

Sources tell Kotaku that the PSP2's release window is fall 2011. Sony is not yet talking openly about the PSP2.

Sony did not offer a comment in time for publication.

interesting ... would it be touchscreen? ... would be cool --- incorporating a keyboard and you have a contender for the iphone

Doesn't need to compete with the iPhone tbh. The iPhone is a phone.

Just needs to keep improving (forgetting the PSP Go) and stay ahead of the Nintendo DS.

thing is, the article specifically mentioned the iPad

not to mention all the statements in the article about being bigger and larger, clearly that is another reference to the ipad rather than the iphone

Why bring out a second one. The 3DS will be out in main markets by then, so will be selling. I'd have 3D over HD. The 3DS sounds more appealing than this. I wonder if Sony will copy anything again, if it gets a touch screen/camera etc... It's just really copying Nintendo. Just like Move. I prefer the real deal.

well it seems that the specs arent finalized yet... so maybe theres nothing stopping them from adding a parallax barrier to the screen just like Nintendo

Can't believe he said "then you have a contender for the iPhone".

Gaming wise the PSP is a lot better than the iPhone, I haven't found any games that I thoroughly enjoy on the iPhone half as much as games on the PSP...

I was referring only to the keyboard and touchscreen side of the iphone not to the entire device ...

I had the internet in mind as it sux currently on the pspgo using analog to type the address

Sure gaming wise the PSP is better but you can not simply dismiss the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Many, many people are just casual gamers. Before the iPhone and iPod touch existed the only option was a PSP or DS. Now you have two devices that have a ton of games, many for free and almost 100% under $9.99. This is the market Sony and Nintendo need to cater too if they want to survive. Hardcore gamers such as ourselves just do not have the numbers to keep them alive. They have to draw in the casual crowd or die in place. I have an iPad and there are several very cool games on it.

its nice that they are working on something new (the pspgo was a failure for marketing) however with an even larger screen it is getting away from the idea of a portable gaming device. if it cannot easily fit in my pocket i am not likely to carry it around.

Agreed. Personally, I definitely prefer playing games on a DS or the PSP, just because having buttons and a more "traditional" control setup tends to allow for more complex games. That said, there are quite a few people who are perfectly fine with smaller, more casual games. I can definitely see those people buying an iPod Touch (or possibly even an iPad) as opposed to a PSP, since the latter's only advantage is something that many casual gamers can easily do without.

I like to think that the two can co-exist, but there's no denying the fact that the iOS devices are siphoning off users from Sony and Nintendo. Not enough to make them fear for their lives, but enough to be significant.

As for the PSP2, I definitely have high hopes. With Kaz Hirai in charge of SCEI, there should hopefully be an increased amount of emphasis on software now.

I relly wouldn't cre about the 3D part of the 3DS. sure it'd be cool in some games, but it'd quickly get tiring and old. and a lot of games won't use it anyway since no 3D allows them much better graphics.

the reason for getting a nintendo over a sony handheld, is tht when it comes to handhelds, nintendo make much better games.

Yeah but

Sony: Product overheating a year from release, okay we'll fix it first.

MS: Product overheating a year from release, **** it just put it out on the market and hope for the best.

Don't tell that to the Sony laptop batteries that started fires :)

Different division and unrelated to Munky's post.
