Questions before I buy a PS3...

Recommended Posts

I want to upgrade my old 24" pre-DHCP computer monitor and I would also like to buy a PS3 so I can play GT5. I don't own a TV and haven't for 6 years or more. I stream or download my TV.

I was considering buying this 32" TV:

Anything bigger would be too big for a computer monitor. My computer motherboard and the PS3 have HDMI that can plug into this TV perfectly so it seems like a perfect choice.

Now on to the PS3 questions.

1) Will it also play old PSone games? Need for Speed III is still my favorite game lol.

2) IF I wanted to play GT5 in 3D, aside from a 3D compatible TV and the right PS3 firmware, what else do I need like glasses? If this route isn't much more, I will get the right TV and go this path.

Thanks!

You can play original Playstation games, but PS2 isn't available (unless you manage to find an old PS3).

As for 3D, I believe that TVs that require glasses come with a pair or two. That's more of a guess though, I've not been even slightly interested in 3D so I've not taken the time to look.

As mentioned by everyone else it plays PSOne games out the box and as long as you have the right firmware the PS3 is 3D ready and just requires the TV and glasses oh and a HDMI 1.4 cable for 1080p signals I believe.

As for your glasses question you just need the ones that work with the TV as it is that which is displaying the 3D picture.

I thought only the older PS3's played PSOne games? I thought after the 80GB it was removed?

That's PS2 games. They all play PS1 games.

So...IF I did want to also play PS2 games, is that just a firmware version or a hardwre version, or both?

Hardware version, you need one of the old 60GB consoles. Not recommended, I'd go for a Slim.

Many have claimed the PS3 (in theory,) could do PS2 emulation completely in software.

That is, if Sony wanted to invest the time and money in something like that.

Oh, and in regards to "3D Glasses" - you use what the TV uses. It has nothing to do with the system. The system outputs 3D a certain way, but different output devices may use different standards for their 3D. So one pair of glasses may work fine on one TV, but not another.

Plus there are some (smaller) TVs that would display 3D without any glasses.

Sony can make more by releasing "remastered" editions of their games.
