It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real -- but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. Looking almost identical to the mockup we hit you with this summer, the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch, and you can see in the photos that it's still bearing those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons. For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards.

Crazy and cool.. this might actually put Apple further down the extinction line thanks to Android.

Hideous... The slide out area looks like it's unfinished and the design of the front looks so out of date... This is some of the ugliest hardware I've seen in ages...

It's prototype..not the retail version. The design will be quite a bit more polished and different.

When did Sony really make something that looked ugly? They are one of the few CE companies that really pays attention to design as well..

Where does it say that it's a believed prototype? It says that it's heading to market soon. Will there be changes? Probably. But not drastic enough to make this look good. And a few years ago I would have agreed with you on Sony's design work being generally good, but in recent years, with the PSP Go, PS3, etc. I just don't think they're on their A game anymore. Maybe their chief designer left or something...

From Engadget:

The particular model in these shots is still in prototyping mode. As such, the unit doesn't have a custom skin (not even SE's Timescape design seen on the Xperia devices), and is said to be rather buggy.

Ugly is an under statement. What a pos fugly little thing. I wouldn't even wanna get it anywhere near me and good luck with gaming on Android.

nGage FTW.

So Playstation is now a brand? Will it run PSP games? PSP doesn't run on Android so I assume not (though it does sorta run on linux in a roundabout way)...

Ugh... What a fail. This device combines something good (Android) with the bad (Sony games consoles) ... I would much rather have an iPhone than this. I bet you, Sony will advertise this as the best new thing... But we already have the iPhone. Just like they did with Move... And the Wii.

This thing will be a complete failure, just like the PSP and N-Gage.

Also, we get it. You don't like Apple.

Doubtful. Sony doesn't know software.

When did Sony really make something that looked ugly?

The PS3 says hello.
